Sony has some loyal fans in the smartphone space, but the announcement of the Xperia Pro and its $2,500 price tag will push those fans' limits.

While the phone is packed with just about every feature under the sun, it's almost impossible to justify such an extreme price for any smartphone.

What Does the Sony Xperia Pro Bring to the Table?

The most surprising aspect of the Sony Xperia Pro is the processor. You'd expect Sony to include the latest chipset in the form of the Snapdragon 888. However, Sony used last year's Snapdragon 865, which is a baffling decision. While the 865 is still a potent processor, you'd expect a phone that costs more than double the price of Samsung's top-of-the-line flagship to feature the latest and greatest.

Sony also included 12GB of RAM and 512GB of expandable storage, which is a pretty nice bump over its previous flagship.

The Xperia Pro also includes a 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED display, which is solid but hardly enough to justify spending $2,500. Surprisingly, Sony didn't announce the screen's refresh rate. At this price, we'd hope to see 120Hz, but the fact that Sony didn't reveal as much leads us to believe it's not.

You'll get three 12MP cameras with the new Pro model phone. There's also an 8MP selfie camera on the front of the device.

Surprisingly, Sony included Android 10 as the OS for the Xperia Pro. Android 11 launched a few months ago, so not including it on a flagship device out-of-the-box is somewhat confusing.

As you'd expect, the phone features full 5G support, including both 5G Sub-6 and 5G mmWave technology.

There's a 4,000mAh battery inside the phone to keep things running. And while Sony did include Fast Charging for quick top-offs, the company doesn't offer wireless charging, shocking for any high-end phone.

Sony included a 3.5mm port, which is a rare find from any smartphone nowadays. There's also HDMI input support via type-D connection, which is what makes this phone different from others on the market.

Sony makes this phone stand out with its non-traditional features. Rather than just functioning as a smartphone, the Xperia Pro also has live broadcasting features that allow it to connect to a DSLR's HDMI port and display what the camera sees. This will enable it to serve as a larger monitor for the DSLR with full 4K support.

Sony Xperia Pro Availability

As mentioned, the Sony Xperia Pro will retail for $2,500, which is quite a bit higher than other flagship phones.

With that said, this phone is targeted at professionals who will take advantage of the DSLR connectivity. However, some of the other specs and features make it hard to justify that price.

Still, if the phone does sound like something you want, you can order it from Sony's website or B&H.
