If your new PS5 has been buckling under the weight of your massive digital game library, then it is probably time to consider upgrading your internal memory.

Luckily, the ability to do so is on the horizon...

Sony Confirms Summer Storage Update

According to Bloomberg, Sony has confirmed that the PS5 storage expansion capabilities it promised us are, at last, coming to fruition. Last November, we found out that storage expansion wouldn't work straight out of the box. Now, hope is in sight.

We won't even have to wait that long, either. Support for added storage will come to the PS5 this summer. So get your M.2 SSD at the ready, gamers. Installation time is almost upon us.

What Does the Storage Update Do?

Well, it enables you to expand the internal storage of the PS5 past the fairly unimpressive 667 GB ofg storage set aside for your games.

The actual size of the PS5 storage rolls in at 885 GB, with 218 GB earmarked for system storage (as opposed to your game data etc). So, with only 667 GB to play with, gamers have understandably felt short-changed.

To put this into context, Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War requires just over 130 GB of available space in order to install.

Besides that, gamers will then have to suck up the massive season updates that come with Cold War. The Season 2 update, for example, weighs in at a lofty 25 GB just for the main game. This doesn't account for the 20 GB Warzone will take up, if you also play that mode.

How Do You Get the PS5 Storage Update?

Sony will make the storage upgrade capabilities available to PS5 owners via a console update. So, you don't really need to do anything as long as you have auto-updates enabled.

If not, you simply need to check for the update when summer rolls around. However, we advise you to have auto-updates on so you don't miss any important security patches or additional features.

Once you have the update, your PS5 should be ready to accept a nice shiny M.2 SSD and all the additional storage that will bring.

With auto-updates enabled, you simply need to sit and wait while Sony finalizes the plans and sets a release date. As we have previously advised, it is best to hold off on buying your SSD until Sony offers some advice on the best card for PS5.

However, there is no harm in shopping around to see what kind of offers are available on M.2 SSDs at the moment, that way you can budget ready for Sony's announcement. Or, if you're not sure about SSDs but still want to upgrade, then perhaps a little research is in order, first.
