Microsoft used to have the only console that could boost the performance of older games, but that has just changed. Sony has brought the heat with a simple 20-second trailer that shows that the console wars are far from over.

How Sony Invaded Microsoft's Turf With One Trailer

If you want to see the trailer in question, we've linked it below. It's a short watch, so be sure to check it out if you want to see what Sony has planned for the PS5.

The trailer is scarce of information, but the few nuggets we can get from it are enough to send shivers down Microsoft's spine. Sony has confirmed that a new feature called "Game Boost" will come to the PS5, and it'll give PS4 classics a brand new look.

It seems the Game Boost feature will use the PS5's system specifications to enhance PS4 game. Sony hasn't directly confirmed which games work with this service, but the trailer did show us glimpses of God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, and Ghost of Tsushima. As such, it's safe to assume those will be the pioneer titles for the PS5 Game Boost service.

Why Is Game Boost a Threat to Microsoft?

This move is a big problem for Microsoft because, until today, the Xbox was the only console that enhanced older games using a feature called "FPS Boost."

For a while, the Xbox was the undeniable king of backward compatibility. Microsoft allows Xbox fans to dig through their old library of games and use them on modern-day consoles. There is no need to rebuy digital re-releases or use a service like PS Now's PS3 compatibility; use the same disc you bought all those years ago.

Then, Microsoft decided to do one better. Instead of just playing your old games as-is, it released FPS Boost, a feature that enhances select games with the Xbox Series X and S's power.

However, now that Sony has its own version with Game Boost, the race is on. We'll have to see if Sony manages to catch up to the competition or if the king of backward compatibility manages to retain its crown.

A War of Two Boosts

Microsoft has enjoyed little competition in the backward compatibility niche, but Sony wants to change that. Now, Sony is revamping its PS4 classics, and it's only a matter of time until we see how Microsoft responds.

In fact, one can argue that Sony began its fight as soon as it made PS4 games playable on the PS5. Sony's consoles are getting better with their backward compatibility, and it may not be long before it's snapping at Microsoft's heels.
