A recent development in LCD display manufacturing has led to a potential release window for Sony's forthcoming next-gen PSVR hardware being leaked.

PSVR2 Could Arrive in 2022

Following a report from Bloomberg, rumors are now circulating that we could see the next-gen PSVR2—Sony's virtual reality ecosystem—hitting the PS5 in late 2022.

According to the report, anonymous individuals with knowledge on the matter have stated that the console manufacturer plans to release the PlayStation 5-native VR system during the 2022 holiday period.

Currently, Sony plans to use Samsung Display Co. OLED panels in the VR headset, although whether this is true remains to be seen.

However, this is potentially great news for those awaiting PSVR2 on their new PlayStation 5 consoles. Especially considering the first iteration of PSVR isn't compatible with the PS5 without complex workarounds.

What Do We Know About PSVR2?

Unfortunately, we don't know a great deal about the forthcoming PS5 VR experience. Sony has held its cards close to its chest on this one, so we're mainly reliant on rumors and soundbites from "people close to the developments" (or words to that effect).

Sony confirmed PSVR2 is on the way back in February 2021. At the time, it revealed very little about the new ecosystem. It touted a new headset and some new software, but aside from that, details were thin on the ground.

Later, in March 2021, Sony confirmed details of its PSVR2 controllers. These orb-shaped devices seek to improve the ergonomic quality of the controllers, making holding and using them much easier than the first PSVR.

Add to that the fact that developers should now have prototype PSVR2 controllers (and probably headsets as well, although Sony hasn't mentioned this) and we've got a PlayStation VR environment hurtling through the design process.

What Is PSVR?

PSVR is Sony's own virtual reality ecosystem. It initially released the hardware for the PS4, alongside a wide range of titles dedicated to VR gameplay. Sony has given some of these games the PS5 treatment, meaning you can play them on the PS5, with the original PSVR headset and camera; you just need some extra gear to do it.

Sony intends PSVR2 to provide a native way to play virtual reality titles on your PS5 without the need for all the extra equipment. However, if you want to enjoy PSVR on your PS5 now, there is nothing stopping you, save for sourcing the relevant dongle from Sony.
