Although Sony already offers a voice chat feature on its PlayStation consoles, the Japanese tech giant has decided to make a big move and partner with Discord to provide players with another easy and fun way to connect with one another.

Discord Is Coming to the PlayStation Network

Sony has announced that it is partnering up with Discord. It's no surprise that Sony chose this platform since it is regarded as one of the world's most popular communication services used by over 140 million people every month.

According to a post on the Sony Interactive Entertainment Blog, the main goal of the partnership is to "bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together."

Unfortunately, there are not many details yet available about how the two will be integrated. So we'll just have to guess for now whether the Discord app will make an appearance on PlayStation consoles or only the ability to connect the two accounts.

More information about the partnership between Sony and Discord should come to light in the coming months.

It looks like this cooperation will lead to fruitful results. Sony president and CEO Jim Ryan expressed his excitement from partnering with Discord:

From our very first conversation with co-founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy, I was inspired by their lifelong love for gaming and our teams' shared passion to help bring friends and communities together in new ways. Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do, so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world's most popular communication services.

Also, Sony revealed that it has made "a minority investment as part of Discord's Series H round." However, the companies haven't specified the exact amount of the investment.

Is Sony too Late With This Partnership?

Sony is not the only tech company interested in integrating this communication platform within its products.

Microsoft, for example, has already introduced the option for gamers to link their Discord account to their Xbox Live account. However, since this integration is somewhat limited, Sony has a chance to stand out by offering a tighter integration.

We'll just have to wait and see whether or not that's the plan.
