If you have been waiting for news on the next-gen successor to PSVR, then we have some good news for you. Sony has just announced the VR tech for the PlayStation 5 and it sounds awesome.

Sony Announces New PSVR for PlayStation 5

In a blog post at PlayStation.com, Sony has made everything official. At last it has announced the rightful successor to the PlayStation Virtual Reality (PSVR) system. It has announced a new headset, and to go alongside it, new VR content.

Currently, the PSVR system isn't compatible with the PlayStation 5. We've known this would be the case since before launch. However, this is quite the turnaround from Sony's previous narrative.

Previously, we were told that we couldn't expect PSVR on the PS5 any time soon. But now, it seems, we can!

What Will the New PSVR Do?

Currently, details are fairly limited. We don't have any images of the new headset or of any next-gen PSVR gaming content. However, we do know that Sony is working on something, so that is a start.

Speaking about the system, Sony has this to say:

We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.

So not only will we have virtual reality on the PS5, but it will obviously also feature top end graphics and boast enhanced immersion into the game as a result.

Aside from the headset, we will also be treated to a new controller. Sony says:

One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.

Hopefully, one of those "key features" isn't the joystick sensors that are prone to DualSense drift, which certainly isn't future proof.

When Will the New PSVR Launch?

Currently, we don't know. Sony says that it won't be in 2021, so at least we have that as a guideline. Sony intends this as an early update for fans of PSVR.

So, with that in mind, we're possibly looking at a 2022 launch of the next-gen PSVR system. It all sounds pretty exciting. If you wanted to try out some virtual reality in the meantime, you can always opt for the PS4 version, or a different brand altogether.
