Snapchat is working on a feature that directly challenges TikTok's Duets. The feature in question, called Remix, allows you to build off of your friends' Snaps, adding a whole new layer to Snapchat.

Snapchat Works on Duet-Like Remixes

Reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi first discovered the upcoming Remix feature and outlined all the details in a Tweet. "Snapchat is working on the possibility of remixing friends' Stories," Paluzzi wrote.

Remix will let you record a video reply to your friend's Snap, all while your friend's clip plays directly next to it. When you record your Remix, you can choose between different formats, including whether your video appears next to, above, or in the corner of the original clip. As shown in the screenshots provided by Paluzzi, you'll be able to give permission for your friends to Remix your Snap by tagging them.

This feature is undoubtedly similar to Duets on TikTok, which are typically reserved for actual song duets, as well as funny collaborations or reactions. Duets are essentially two-in-one videos, displaying the original video in one area of the video, and another user's contribution in the other. TikTok also gives users options to change the layout of the Duet, just like Snapchat is planning to do.

A Snapchat spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that developers are, indeed, working on the feature: "I can confirm that externally we are testing the ability to reply to a friend’s story with a remixed Snap. It lets you build on your friend’s Snap while recording your own alongside the original as it plays for contextual conversations on Snapchat."

Although it looks like this feature will be reserved for use between friends, that's bound to change. Snapchat launched Spotlight to directly compete with TikTok. Spotlight is an in-app hub for short-form videos, containing an endless stream of curated clips that you can scroll through. To get more people to use the TikTok clone, Snapchat even splits up a $1 million reward for users who produce the most popular Spotlight videos on a daily basis.

Will Snapchat Ever Topple TikTok?

With TikTok being one of the most popular social media apps on the market, platforms like Snapchat and Instagram are striving to stay relevant. Short-form videos are becoming more attractive than ever, as they pack a punch, and are easy to create.

If TikTok ever integrates its Remix feature with Spotlight, it could give Spotlight the edge it needs to outrun TikTok. Giving users the option to react and collaborate in Spotlight is essential, otherwise, Spotlight may never reach TikTok's level of popularity.
