What Is Snap’s Black Creator Accelerator Program?

Black Accelerator is a program launched by Snap to fund Black creators who want to venture into content creation full-time. The initiative was announced in a Snap blog post on June 23, 2022, which read:

Today, we are excited to announce our first accelerator program focused on supporting 25 emerging, undiscovered Black talent on their journey to make content creation a full-time career.

The point is to give Black creators that lack resources a boost, so they can have a fair chance at turning their passion into a career. The program is similar to TikTok's Creator Fund, which also helps creators turn their love for content creation into a career.

Each creator will be paid $10,000 every month for a year towards their endeavors. What's more, they will enjoy perks like exclusive access to new features and the opportunity to test upcoming features in Beta. Snap will also equip them with educational programs through SnapSchool and webinars.

To make this happen, Snap has partnered with three companies—Google Pixel, UNCMMN, and Westbrook Media. The companies will provide the creators with the support and resources needed to flourish in the program.

In addition to a cash injection, these resources include mentorship, real-life experiences, and a Google Pixel phone to take snaps with. Do you own any Google Pixel products? Read more about how Google is building the Pixel ecosystem to rival Apple.

Why Snap Is Launching the Black Creator Accelerator Program

Every day, thousands of creators upload content that takes time to produce and edit. Some creators are lucky enough to see their content go viral, but Black creators' names are seldom attached to their content.

Black creators have voiced their concerns over their White counterparts getting credit for their content on social media, with platforms like TikTok receiving backlash for pushing White creators' content over that of Black creators in its algorithm.

Another challenge faced by Black creators is a lack of resources necessary to successfully chase their content-creating dreams. Snap wants to address these challenges by giving them a hand up to start their full-time content creation journeys and become professional creators.

How to Apply to Join Snap's Black Creator Accelerator Program

If you're a Black Snapchat content creator interested in joining the Black Creator Accelerator program, you can join by applying online. Visit this 523 page and tap the Apply Now button in the Apply to 523 for Black Creators section.

This will take you to a Google Form, which you should complete as honestly as possible to increase your chances of being chosen. However, keep in mind that Snap will only pick 25 creators for the program.

According to the Snap blog post, it doesn't matter how many followers you have or whether you've had any brand deals in the past. What matters more is whether your values align with the brand's values and whether you have a "unique voice" and a clear vision for your career as a content creator.

It probably goes without saying, but you should already have a Snapchat account to qualify for the program. Applications opened on June 23, 2022, and close on August 12, 2022. Snap will select participants in September 2022.
