How do I make Windows 8 look like Windows XP? Also, how do I upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 8.1?

There are a number of apps that will allow you to have a "proper" Start Button, the one I use is Start8 from Stardock, you can read about it here:http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/ It costs $4.99 which is very little! The thing I like about it is that you can change the button graphic easily to almost anything you want, there are thousands of them about. In the configeration menu is the option to boot straight to the desktop after login, if you want to bypass the lock screen and login let me know and I will explain it to you.As I said there are other apps that give you the Start button back so you have options if you dont like Start8

Which parts and what exactly do you want to Skin? There is an array of stuff you can do for example on my system I boot straight to the desktop, have a "proper" Start button, skinned the icons, changed the GUI (with WindowBlinds) and much more.Be a little more specific and I am sure we can help you.

Alan, thanks for your prompt response. Greatly appreciate it. What I basically want is the same that you have mentioned about your case i.e. boot straight to the iconic XP theme for the desktop with proper START button et al that is currently available in Win XP.

To upgrade to Win 8.1, make sure you have all of the current patches on your Win 8 system. Once Windows 8 is completely up-to-date, open up the Microsoft Store. The very first item you see should be the Windows 8.1 upgrade. Installing that monster download (more than 3GB) does the trick, but every one that I have done has taken nearly 2 hours on new laptops and 1 new desktop. Once that is done, make sure you get the Windows 8.1 Update (dumb naming, but what do you expect from Microsoft) from Windows Update so you will continue to get your updates on Patch Tuesday.
