I have a quite old PC connected to my living room TV which I use for movies and series. It's time for a format and I lost my Windows 7 installation disc. Is Windows 8 a good choice for only watching video files?

I wouldn't bother installing Windows 8 if only using your PC for movies. It is fine as it is.8 will only add more bloat.

No, they removed the DVD decoder, which allows you to watch movies on it, unless you buy the media center pack for Windows 8, which has the DVD decoder. You can also by a DVD decoding program such as Cyberlink PowerDVD.

Hello, personally I would not buy windows 8 just to watch movies. You have several choices including free ones. If your computer is old, the best way would to try installing a linux distro such as linux mint that already has all the codecs for playing media and it is user friendly. Also, it works pretty good on older systems:http://www.linuxmint.com/If just linux mint is not to your liking, you could try installing something like xbmc that works in windows, linux, mac:http://xbmc.org/Also, if you have the license, you can ask a friend that has same windows 7 version as yours if you could use his installation disc. As long as it is the same version, you can still use your license to install it.

If you are watching movies and series than i would suggest you to install ubuntu, or some android version you will be more satisfied, and it's free!

no, i don't prefer windows 8 for only watch video.

If you will use it for other purposes in the future then it becomes logical. However at this stage I don't recommend you spend your money for Windows 8 for watching movies. Windows 8 requires Media Center Pack ($9.99) for DVD playback. It does not even has a Blu-Ray playing capability. You could of course install some freeware alternatives like XBMC if you intend using Windows 8. I only recommend you to buy Windows 8 if you don't want to miss reduced prices until this month.

If movies are the only thing you use it for, then the only thing that really makes sense to upgrade is hard disk space for more movies. Changing operating systems to watch movies seems a little extreme, especially considering the price of the the Windows 8 standalone product.

If you still have a serial key for Windows 7 and you just lost the disc, don't waste it. You could borrow a disk from someone or download it (be cautious with downloading from the web though). Windows 7 works very well for HTPC setups. Windows 8 is nice for a living room tv setup only if you have the media center pack though. The metro interface IMO makes it easier for doing certain tasks as the tiles are big. There is not too much of a reason to pay for the upgrade if you are only using it to view video though. Just my two cents....

If your looking just to play media why not try XBMCbuntu from xbmc.org xbmc's own operating system
2013-01-25 14:51:37
I perfectly agree to your comment provided XBMCbuntu runs fine on that old pc
2013-01-24 13:27:13
IT doesn't matter if you use only to watch movies
2013-01-24 08:47:55
i can not find any advantage of paying money for upgrade to win8 for only use in movies win 7 is more than enought
2013-01-24 04:05:55
why don't you make it a media server so that you can stream movies and series onto any device like TV. or you can use it for this http://lifehacker.com/5919558/turn-an-old-computer-into-a-networked-backup-streaming-or-torrenting-machine-with-ubuntu
2013-01-24 03:19:05
personally i think no because you are only watching movies and for that you can download third party software for user friendly interface and more supported video formats.

Spending on an upgrade when you only do one thing isn't really worth it. Save your money.

2013-01-23 19:24:06

if you install windows 8 on an old computer you will have many compatibility problems. its never good idea to use newer os than the one that came with your pc.

Understanding the Media Options in Windows 8http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/understanding-the-media-options-in-windows-8.htmlWindows 8 has two resolution requirementshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_8 resolution of 1024×768 or greater. you will need windows 8 media centerhttp://www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/get-the-windows-8-media-center-pack-for-free-but-be-prepared-to-wait/6928if you do not have the option to get back windows 7, then i suggest use the upgrade feature to go to windows 8. Upgrade is less expensive than the full commercial windows 8 DVD.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/buy

Personally I wouldnt buy Windows 8 just for watching video files, it seems to be just a waste of money. You can, if you dont know your Win 7 serial number download a utility like Magic Jellybean Key Finder to locate it in your registry,Available here: [Broken Link Removed] just be careful on the install not to include any crapware.Once you have your key you can download your version of Windows 7 here: http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f94/original-untouched-windows-7-sp1-iso-32-bit-64-bit-220877/

perhaps the license do not allow more than one time activation?
