I would like to enable my grandfather to watch some movies and see some pictures that are on my computer. We are some 3000 miles apart, but we both have broadband and I use a router. Thanks in advance.

For photo sharing you can now buy digital photo displays that will read directly from sites like flickr. Upload your photos to flickr and then they'll automatically appear on a digital photo frame.

Teamviewer doesn't transmit desktop audio without a sophisticated setup such as Virtual Audio Cable, only a microphone.

I use VLC to stream media to my friends. Check out the VLC documentation for setup.  You'll probably want to use HTTP streaming, I believe the doc assumes your only sharing on your network. The downside of this method is that it consumes a metric fuckton of bandwidth.
