My school is using Google apps for our email. Until recently, we have been using Blackboard IM for our IM services. However, we will soon not be using this service any longer. We will need to use the Gmail chat, but I still like the idea of a desktop IM instead of a web-based IM (the google apps chat in gmail looks terrible), so I downloaded Pidgin. For some reason though, I can't connect. I suspect that it is my settings that prevent me from doing so. Please tell me the settings which I need to input for Pidgin 2.10.6.
If you can direct me to other Instant-messengers that work, then please include them!

@Sebastian: Thank you very much for the succinct instructions. I've scoured the tubes... all of the tubes... and finally found your instructions. Yours were the only instructions that had ALL of the correct settings for Pidgin >> Google Talk in one place. Big thumbs up!

Do you have two-factor verification enabled? If so, you have to generate an application-specific password for Pidgin using the authentication tokens sub page.https://accounts.google.com/IssuedAuthSubTokens

If Pidgin is not working for you, then try Trillian which is optimized for Windows 7 -http://www.trillian.im/windows/

I think you need to manually setup the server by adding XMPP account from pidgin.Protocol: XMPPScreen name: yourusernameServer: yourdomain.comResource: HomePassword: yourpasswordLocal alias: Your Alias, set to anything you want# AdvanceCheck the "Force old SSL" option and uncheck "Allow over unencrypted streams" option.Set connect port to: 5223Set the connect server to: talk.google.comFull info how to do this can be found on Google Webpage here:http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=49147
