Google Voice now includes custom rules for incoming calls. The new changes will let you select various options when receiving calls from different people. You can automatically ignore calls from a given contact, set custom voicemail greetings, and more.

Here's everything you should know about the Google Voice custom rules for incoming calls.

Google Voice Adds Custom Rules for Calls

Google Voice is getting a couple of custom rules for incoming calls. Announcing the news in a blog post, Google said, "These options allow you to route incoming calls in ways that are most efficient to your workflows and productivity, including granular settings for specific contacts."

While call forwarding was available on Google Voice before the announcement, the company brings an additional setting for customization.

Specifically, you can now forward calls from specific contacts to your linked numbers, or even better, directly to voicemail.

There are a total of four new custom rules available in Google Voice. You can do the following:

  • Forward calls from specific users to your linked numbers or voicemail.
  • Screen calls from certain contacts.
  • Set custom voicemail greetings for specific users.
  • Apply custom rules for all contacts or specific groups within your contacts.

The only bummer at the moment is you can only access these rules via the website at voice.google.com. You can't set custom rules via the Google Voice mobile apps, although you can at least view them.

To view and set custom rules on your account, visit voice.google.com and tap the Settings icon. From there, select Calls > Create a rule.

Choose How You Want Incoming Calls to Be Handled

Now that Google Voice has custom rules, there's no reason you shouldn't use these features. They are free to use and the only disadvantage, at least for now, is you must visit the Google Voice website to set them up.

These rules should be handy for allowing you to customize your incoming call experience.
