Gaming In The Classroom [INFOGRAPHIC]

When I was at school, the method of teaching was watching the teacher explain it on the blackboard and then pray to God that you understood everything they were telling you. But these days, children are definitely pampered with this infographic claiming that gaming-related teaching is on the rise in the classroom. Is it happening in your school? Is your child coming home with “gaming thumbs”?

This year has been a big year for iOS gaming. Some games have hit the market that have absolutely blown gamers away. It is hard to believe that some of these games are even played on an iPad. As the technology for iOS devices continue to improve, video game creators are stepping their games up along with it.

If you were a kid (or parent) in the ’90s, you know Pokémon. Video games, movies, and perhaps most popularly with trading cards, Pokémon exploded onto the scene and every kid wanted to be a part of it. Today, the monster-taming adventure continues on through handheld consoles as games continue to be released under this legendary series.

GraalOnline is a game that heavily lends from the style of gameplay from arguably the series’ best game: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. That’s a title that you’ll see in many gamers’ top 10 lists, and practically every list of the best RPGs of all-time. If you prefer older, retro-style games next to today’s set of RPGs, this is the type of game you’d be recommending to your kids!

Nintendo took the wraps off its next console, the Wii U, all the way back at E3 2011. But it wasn’t until September 2012 that it decided to reveal the full and official launch details. The Wii U will be released in the U.S. on Nov. 18, in Europe on Nov. 30, and in Japan on Dec. 8. It will cost between $300 and $350 depending on which of the two editions you choose. There will be 22 Wii U games available at launch, with an additional 11 promised before the end of the year.

When Reality Is Too Dull: A Look At Alternate Reality Games

Alternate Reality Games are a curious subculture that attempts to bring the concepts of gaming into the real world. Does this mean running around an industrial complex with water pistols? Not quite. The game nomenclature is deceptive; they’re best thought of as a mix between role-play, puzzle-solving, team-building, immersive fiction and creative writing.

Video games are able to capture much of the emotion and feeling that comes with movies and other forms of entertainment. That being said, video games always seem to struggle with making people laugh and scaring them. I have covered games that actually made me laugh out loud in a previous post (I would like to add Saint’s Row 3 to that list), and today I am going to dig into games that actually scared me.

The 2 Best Sites For Finding Public Ventrilo Servers

Though often viewed as obsolete next to newer software like Mumble, Ventrilo is still my favorite way to communicate with friends in (and sometimes out if) online gaming. It’s a VOIP software that I’m incredibly comfortable with and it takes no more than 5 minutes to learn to use. One of the major inconveniences of the Ventrilo platform is finding a server to do your venting on in the first place.

5 Reasons To Go Back To SimCity 4 [Opinion]

The city builder is a genre that’s nearly disappeared over the last decade. It’s a victim of the market. City builders aren’t the kind of flash-bang titles that big publishers usually love, but they’re also too complex for most small studios to tackle. Electronic Arts will finally revive the SimCity franchise next year, but if you haven’t played the game recently – or *gasp* at all – here are five reasons to fire it up.

6 Video Game Franchises That Did Not Need More Sequels [MUO Gaming]

The video game industry always has, and always will be driven by sequels. Game publishers are always looking for ways to leverage a franchise and turn into something that can be milked for the long haul. For many franchises, this ends up being a good thing. But there are some occasions where the attempt to cash in and build a franchise is a bad thing.

Anyone who plays video games today owes a huge debt of gratitude to Atari and the founders and engineers who worked for the company during its formative years. Atari was responsible for many of the earliest arcade games and some of the earliest games consoles, and throughout the 1970s and 1980s helped shape the industry that now competes with Hollywood in terms of budgets and earnings.

Obviously, that is not going to happen, but it is still fun to pretend.

A Day in the Life of a Videogame Scriptwriter [Feature]

If you’ve ever played a videogame that you really enjoyed, chances are you haven’t noticed the characters or any speech in the game – or if you have, you probably won’t have considered that they’ve been created, fleshed out and given dialogue by a videogame scriptwriter. One such writer whose stock is pretty high right now is Dean Wilkinson, responsible for the wonderful instructional dialogue spoken by Stephen Fry in LittleBigPlanet and more recently the pen behind the words of Matt Berry’s Don Keystone in the forthcoming Worms: Revolution. We went out to meet Dean at his office, and see what it’s really like to write scripts and content for high-profile videogames.

Although Steam’s community is unrivaled, there are a lot of other desktop and laptop clients that will allow you to buy, download, and manage your digital copies of games.

One of my favorite things to see in a video game is user-generated content. That is, as long as it makes sense within the context of the game, of course. Some games have done a less than stellar job of implementing user-generated content, and it ends up feeling like a throw-in afterthought. However, when a game gets it right and truly knocks it out of the park, it can be something special to behold. The games on this list are examples of user-generated content done right, and I hope many more games follow along with them.

Yes, games aren’t nearly as important as software you may need for work, but you’ll still feel the same frustration.
