For example, MS Word writes a ~filename.docx temp file when I open a document. I would like to hide these files.

you can perhaps open word files from a folder rather on the desktop?  If that folder is the desktop, then the temp files will be there tooperhaps the command?ATTRIB +h *.tmp

Or Temp files only ?!These ms word temp files have the same name and extension prefixed by ~$ anywhere, in any folder.*.docx or  *.docAnd they are hidden by default. You just have to set folder options not to show hidden files.

set folder options not to show hidden files  is the right method for all hidden files as you mentioned, asking windows to hide only a certain temp files it is a long way i believe.

You still did not understand, 1)It is not a *.tmp file, it is *.docx or *.doc file.So attrib +h*.tmp will not affect, it is for *.tmp files only.Plus,2) The file already has the Hidden attribute by default. The only step remains is telling the folder options not to show the hidden files, and the file will not be displayed. It's simple.

Hello, these files are hidden by default, unless the default settings were changed.

I think the temporary file contains, whatever you write before saving, so it can be recovered if ms word is closed without saving the file. You can choose "do not show hidden files" (from the view tab of folder options which is in the tools menu) and the file will not be displayed.
