Google has added several new features to Google Meet this April. One of these features is a saver mode that helps conserve data and battery on your phone. Another noticeable item is you now have Meet's Q&A feature in the Meet app for Android devices.
Google Adds Saver Mode to Google Meet
On its Meet Help site, Google lists out all the features it has recently added to Meet. Using one of these new features, you can continue your video calls with the app even if you're low on battery or data.
When this saver mode is enabled, Meet restricts the amount of data that's used for your calls. It also conserves the battery power to make your phone last as long as possible. There are some improvements on how Meet utilizes your phone's CPU, which also results in better battery performance.
How to Enable Saver Mode in Google Meet on Android
Keep in mind that Google is still in process of rolling out these new features, which means you may or may not see these options in your app right away.
When saver mode becomes available, you can enable it as follows in Google Meet:
- Launch the Google Meet app on your phone.
- Tap three horizontal lines at the top-left corner, and select Settings.
- Turn on the Limit data usage option.
Your calls with Google Meet will use restricted data as long as this option is enabled.
Q&A in Google Meet on Android Devices
Q&A is a feature in Google Meet that helps you ask your participants questions. This feature is now being made available to the Android version of the Meet app.
From now on, you can start a Q&A session with Meet even on your Android-based devices.
Currently, the following Workspace users can use this feature in Meet:
- Essentials
- Business Standard
- Business Plus
- Enterprise Essentials
- Enterprise Standard
- Enterprise
- Education plus (Available to users with a "teacher" or "student" license)
- G Suite Business
If you're on one of these Workspace plans, you can enable Q&A by tapping Meet's menu > Activities > Q&A > Turn on Q&A.
Conserve Data and Power in Google Meet Video Calls
Video calls tend to use quite a lot of data and battery juice on smartphones. With Google's new saver mode in Meet, you will be able to save on those two important items while still being able to make video calls with this app.
