After a few months of steady leaks, Samsung has finally unveiled its foldable phones for 2022, the Galaxy Z Flip4 and the Galaxy Z Fold4. The phones aren't massively different to last year's models, barring a significantly upgraded chipset and some welcome polish to the design and software, and the relatively high prices are the same as before.

You can pre-order them now, and they're available from August 26. Let's take a look at the specs.

We'll start with the Flip4. Even though it isn't the flagship model, the Flip range is the one that sells in by far the biggest numbers. Hopes that a price drop would make the new model even more accessible did not materialize—it'll start at $999. It's available for pre-order now.

The key changes in the Galaxy Z Flip4 are a refreshed design with a smaller hinge and a less obvious crease cutting the display in half. The size is largely the same though, just a touch shorter but the same thickness.

The main and cover displays remain at 6.7 and 1.9 inches respectively, despite rumors that the latter would be getting an upgrade. The cover screen is more useful than before, as you can now make calls, answer texts, or even unlock your car without opening your phone.

The battery is bigger than last year, growing from 3300mAh to 3700mAh. The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, which should offer significant performance and battery improvements over the older models, with 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage.

The cameras are also largely the same as last time, with 12MP wide and ultrawide cameras on the back and a 10MP selfie camera. Samsung has added a few software tweaks to make use of the fold in the phone. The new FlexCam mode lets you shoot group selfies at various angles while only partially unfolding the device. It's optimized to work with Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook.

The device launches with One UI 4.1, and is good for four Android updates (taking it to Android 16 and One UI 8) and five years of security updates.

The Fold4 is the flagship model. Bigger than the Flip, it folds out into a slightly awkward 7.6-inch tablet with a 21.6:18 aspect ratio. It's also a lot more expensive. Prices start at $1799, and you can pre-order it now.

The improvements to the design and crease are also apparent here, and it's powered by the same processor as the Flip4. Beyond that, the differences to last year's models are minimal.

The battery is the same size at 4400mAH, although hopefully the better chipset will lead to improvements in what was a weak point of the previous model. There's 12MB of RAM, and storage goes up to 1TB.

The cameras are upgraded to a 50MP wide camera, a 10MP telephoto camera offering 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom, and a 12MP ultrawide. There's also a 10MP selfie camera and a 4MP under-display camera that's said to be less visible than before.

The phone runs the tablet-optimized Android 12L, and comes with the same fold-centric software tweaks as the Flip4.

Foldables Are Still Gaining Traction

Samsung is dominating the market for folding phones right now. Last year's Flip3 was reported to have captured more than half the total sales for this type of device. But for how long the company can have the market to itself remains to be seen.

Manufacturers like Motorola are introducing even thinner phones, Google is widely tipped to be launching a Pixel Fold at some point, and even Apple might be joining in soon.
