Given the recent surge in their sales, it seems now more than ever that foldable phones are starting to become fairly reliable mainstream gadgets instead of experimental prototypes. You might be aware of Samsung's latest Z Fold 4 and Flip 4. While the latter clearly has bigger ambition, most people who buy foldables prefer the latter.

However, unknown to many, Motorola has been hard at work trying to beat Samsung with its Moto Razr 2022 which was announced a day after the Flip 4. The former starts at 5,999 CNY (roughly $899) and the latter starts at $999. But how do they compare? Let's find out.

Dimensions and Build Quality

  • Galaxy Z Flip 4: Unfolded: 165.2 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm; 187 grams; IPX8 water-resistant
  • Moto Razr 2022: Unfolded: 167 x 79.8 x 7.6 mm; 200 grams

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 looks almost identical to its predecessor, but it does come with the newer Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection on the back whereas the Moto Razr 2022 uses the weaker Gorilla Glass 5. The former is also lighter and comes with an IPX8 rating for water resistance; the Moto Razr 2022 has a water-repellent coating but no official IP rating.

The Flip 4 comes with a side-mounted capacitive fingerprint sensor whereas the Moto Razr comes with a more flagship-appropriate under-display optical fingerprint scanner. Although, some reviewers say that the capacitive sensor is more user-friendly since it doesn't require you to unfold the device first to be able to unlock it.

The Flip 4 leaves an air gap when folded whereas the Moto Razr 2022 folds completely flat with no visible gap between the two halves. Both devices still show a crease, but the latter's implementation is slightly less noticeable. Sadly, both phones lack a headphone jack; this is one of the several ways flagship phones are getting worse.

Display

  • Galaxy Z Flip 4: 6.7 inches Foldable Dynamic AMOLED 2X; 120Hz refresh rate; HDR10+ support; 1080 x 2640 resolution; 426 PPI; 1200 nits peak brightness; 85.4% screen-to-body ratio; 22:9 aspect ratio; Cover screen: 1.9 inches Super AMOLED; 260 x 512 resolution; Gorilla Glass Victus+
  • Moto Razr 2022: 6.7 inches Foldable P-OLED; 144Hz refresh rate; HDR10+ support; 1080 x 2400 resolution; 393 PPI; 1100 nits peak brightness; Gorilla Glass Victus; 84.6% screen-to-body ratio; 20:9 aspect ratio; Cover screen: 2.7 inches OLED; 573 x 800 resolution

Both devices feature a 6.7-inch display, but the Moto Razr 2022 has a more conventional 20:9 aspect ratio thanks to its wider body. You may find that the 22:9 aspect ratio on the Flip 4 feels a bit too tall. That said, the latter's display is HDR10+ certified for more vivid colors.

The 144Hz refresh rate is an overhyped feature on the Moto Razr since it won't feel any faster in real life compared to the 120Hz refresh rate on the Z Flip 4. Both devices have similar peak brightness levels and screen-to-body ratio, but the Moto Razr has a bigger 2.7-inch cover screen than the 1.9-inch one on the Flip 4.

This means that the former can fit more content in it and make it easier to see glanceable info such as time, weather, date, reminders, and more. And when taking selfie photos using the main camera (while the device is folded), the bigger cover screen makes it easier to see yourself more clearly in the viewfinder.

  • Galaxy Z Flip 4: 12MP f/1.8 primary with OIS, Dual Pixel PDAF, and 4K video at 60fps with HDR10+; 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide with 123-degree FoV; Front: 10MP f/2.4 with 4K video at 30fps.
  • Moto Razr 2022: 50MP f/1.9 primary with OIS, PDAF, and 4K video at 30fps with gyro-EIS; 13MP f/2.2 ultra-wide with 121-degree FoV; Front: 32MP f/2.5 with 4K video at 30fps.

The Z Flip 4 has three cameras in total: a 12MP main lens with OIS, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP front camera. It can shoot 4K video at 60fps on the back and 30fps on the front. The Moto Razr 2022 also has three cameras: a 50MP main lens with OIS, a 13MP ultra-wide lens, and a 32MP front camera. It can shoot 4K video at 30fps on the front and back.

The Moto Razr is capable of shooting higher resolution shots for more detail, but it can't shoot smooth 60fps videos so capturing fast-moving objects such as waterfalls or animals might not be ideal. The Flip 4 has a slightly wider field-of-view to fit more into your shot, but its 10MP selfie camera might not inspire confidence, especially for its price.

Processor

  • Galaxy Z Flip 4: Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1; 4nm fabrication; Adreno 730 GPU
  • Moto Razr 2022: Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1; 4nm fabrication; Adreno 730 GPU

Both devices are rocking the latest 4nm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip which is slightly more powerful and efficient than its predecessor Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. This means that there won't be any significant difference in the raw performance between the two.

That said, if you're a gamer and care about comparing benchmark scores, do keep in mind that the two devices won't show the same benchmark scores despite having the same chipset. Regardless, you shouldn't face any major issues with either of them.

RAM and Storage

  • Galaxy Z Flip 4: 8GB RAM; 128/256/512GB storage
  • Moto Razr 2022: 8/12GB RAM; 128/256/512GB storage

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes with 8GB RAM and up to 512GB of storage. The Moto Razr 2022 comes with up to 12GB RAM and up to 512GB storage as well.

8GB is already more than enough for most people, but if you're planning to do heavy gaming or multitasking on your phone, you can benefit from the higher RAM on the Moto Razr. Sadly, neither of the two devices comes with a microSD card slot for external storage.

Battery

  • Galaxy Z Flip 4: 3700mAh battery; 25W fast wired charging; 15W wireless and 4.5W reverse wireless charging
  • Moto Razr 2022: 3500mAh battery; 33W fast wired charging

Battery life is usually not great on foldable phones since the hinge takes up a lot of room in the device. But as the tech improves over time, this problem will become less bothersome. For now, don't expect amazing battery life from either the Z Flip 4 or the Moto Razr 2022.

That said, the former's slightly bigger 3700mAh battery will outlast the latter's smaller 3500mAh cell. And if you find yourself running out of juice, you can always check out these tips to extend battery life on Android.

The Moto Razr comes with a 33W charger inside the box, but it doesn't support wireless and reverse wireless charging. You can use reverse wireless charging on the Flip 4 to charge your wireless earbuds when there's no power source nearby, making it more flagship-appropriate.

Galaxy Z Flip 4 Is Safer, Moto Razr 2022 Offers More Value

It's hard to ignore the great value that the Moto Razr 2022 offers. Not only is it cheaper to begin with, but it also comes with a 33W charger and a plastic case included inside the box, so you don't have to buy them separately.

That said, we still think the Z Flip 4 is a safer choice for most people given its bigger battery, stronger glass protection on the back, and IPX8 water resistance. After all, if you're going to spend that much, you want the reassurance that your phone can survive a spill or splash.
