I have had a question for a while about the Jolicloud, Ubuntu Netbook, Chromium OS: I know these are “netbook” OSs, but can I also run them on my PC?

I would like to run them as a Live CD on my Compaq desktop – can I donwload the iso for any of them, burn them to a CD and run as a live CD on boot-up?

Also I once installed Chromium OS with guidance from a website to a 2 GB flash drive and tried to boot up. It would not cuz we need a user and password, for which I used the ones from the website. It would continue saying that it could not connect to the network, although I had the LAN plugged in to the computer.

I love Netbookism, although I haven’t been able to buy one. So can I test-run those OSs on my PC by way of Live CD or USB install of any of the above?

Thanks!

Well, I have downloaded the Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Jolicloud pre-beta release ISOs and burned them to CDs. Last night I was enjoying Jolicloud Live CD in my Compaq desktop. It works pretty good. Given that it is the pre-beta release that I downloaded and things boot up very fast, I am so far impressed. There is though a problem or two: The CD failed to detect my monitor resolution, which I had to manually set ( this happens with every LiveCD I try on my computer, except Puppy which automatically fits in the screen resolution). The other crazy thing in my Live CD Jolicloud is my mouse can't select the item I point to on the home page - for example when I point the cursor to Appearances something elsewhere like Main Menu or some other hard drive is selected!...so eerie! So I tried by mostly firing things from the launch/command line with Alt-F2.I haven't yet Live CD'ed Ubuntu Netbook Remix yet.So far so good !

I currently have Chrome OS running through Virtual Box on my computer. I think to login you just have to use a Google Login? I can't remember as I haven't used it for a while, and it was pretty bad.So another option will be to use Virtual Box, which you can find at http://www.virtualbox.org/

For chrome os on a flash drive a guide can be found here: http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/wiki/doku.php?id=windows_instructions. The password and user name are both "facepunch". For ubuntu nbr on a flash drive look here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromImgFiles You can also write the iso to a disc for a live cd: http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download-netbookI don't have any experience with jolicloud so i can't help you there. My experience with ubuntu nbr has been hugely positive, i would highly recommend it.
