I followed the guide on Spotify's website to run it under Wine. I got it installed, but when I try to play a song I get a message saying there is a problem with my sound card. I also tried adding the repos to no avail.

I got the same error message (Ubuntu 11.04). I already had pulseaudio installed. I didn't run the "Fix Script" that h a14 linked, but I changed my wine settings to use EsounD Driver (all else un-checked). and it works!

I installed spotify via PlayOnLinux and it works great.

Thanks. PlayOnLinux was too simple to use and install in my Ubuntu 11.04 It is in the repository and has Spotify in its database of applications ready to install. Perfect. PlayOnLinux is a nice frontend for wine.

Spotify in Winehttp://www.spotify.com/fr/help/faq/wine/#playback-sounds-distorted-a-metallic-noise-noticable-on-high-frequenciesTo get sound back when Wine destroys it all, you only need to do:killall -9 pulseaudioThe pulseaudio system will restart itself in a few seconds, there is no need to manually run it.Make Wine and PulseAudio get alonghttp://blog.paulbetts.org/index.php/2007/05/27/make-wine-and-pulseaudio-get-along/

Try this Spotify Fix Script from this linkhttp://www.linux-depot.com/?p=guides&s=spotifyClose SpotifyIn terminal type winecfgClick on the Audio tab (should be in the top middle)Click “Test Audio” and if you hear a sound this should work..Re-open Spotify and check a track, if it’s playing it’s worked otherwise you may have a different issue..Go to "Applications"->"Wine"->"Wine Configure" and go to the "Audio" tab, it takes a moment to load up. Try those settings:Uncheck "ALSA Driver" boxCheck "EsounD Driver" boxHit Apply, OK and then "Test Sound" and if you can hear the sound clearly try running Spotify again and see if that fixes your sound problems
