After running the WinHelpOnline fix for the .lnk file extension problem all was fixed and ran fine for about four hours. Now it has occurred again and I wonder what is causing the file extensions to change in the first place?

Are you running some cleaning software on your system?Maybe a registry cleaner in the background or so?
