Haven't tried Hostgator before but heard lots of positive feedback about them from known folks. One of the better hosters I suppose. For dedicated host I would recommend Rackspace.

That's ture you can do that, but that wouldn't always be the best thing to do. Why not? Because you have to pay a higher electric bill. Managing your own server is not an easy thing to do. I would recommend trying IsMyWebsite.com instead.

Just as a sidenote ;-) My electric bill has not increased what so ever. When I state host your own utilizing a webserver I don't mean some giant HP or Dell Blade server, just use an old tower or even a microATX box. Its no more expensive to do this than it would be to pay someone else to host your website for you. If you are computer literate enough to be able to setup your own webserver then you will not be worried about managing it. I don't have to do anything in depth to change mine cause I just use something like wordpress that has a GUI administrative front end that does all the hard work for me :-)

What kind of facility do you guys run? Well guarded with dark fiber, low latency and dedicated uptime. You guys have inline UPS with backup generators for long term power failures. Plus, you don't need unlimited bandwidth and disk space, no one will ever use that.Not saying you guys are bad, I'm just saying there's a lot more to a reliable web host than just disk space and bandwidth.

And there we needed to take the site offline.The pros of having volunteers instead of workers is that often, the workers just want home again.
