Now that initial launch hysteria has calmed down, we have started seeing figures trickling through for PS5 launch day sales.

It would seem that the global release has gone well for Sony, with the PlayStation 5 more than doubling the launch day achievements of its PS4 predecessor.

PS5 Sells 2.5 Million Units on Launch Day

We know that PS5 completely outsold the Xbox Series X in its native Japan. Now, according to game sales data analyst VGChartz, the PlayStation 5 sold between 2.1 and 2.5 million units, around the world, on the day it launched.

These are impressive figures. Especially when you consider that the PS4 managed to shift around 1 million on launch day, back in November 2013.

This means that the PS5 has at least doubled the sales of the PS4, even potentially overshooting that "double" milestone by a few hundred thousand units.

Record PS5 Sales Despite Console Shortages

Before the PlayStation 5 was even launched, we knew there were going to be console shortages.

COVID has resulted in supply chain breakdowns and logistical nightmares for Sony. However, it would seem that at least 2.1 million people managed to get hold of the console.

So, in spite of these issues during production and shipping, and the resultant console shortages, Sony has done incredibly well for itself.

Launch day could net Sony in the region of $1-$1.25 billion, depending on how these figures break down between the standard and digital consoles.

The PS5 Outsells Xbox Series X Two-to-One

These impressive numbers also mean that the PS5 has outsold the Xbox Series consoles by double.

According to Xbox Series X sales estimates from VGChartz, the Microsoft next-gen sold somewhere in the region of 1.2 million units worldwide.

This will undoubtedly come as quite a blow to Xbox, given that it hyped up its "best launch day sales ever" so much.

Both Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox Series consoles are currently sold out completely, though.

If Microsoft manages to produce more consoles to meet demand, it may well be able to claw some sales back before we hit the next monthly sales cycle.

However, given that Series X stock shortages are expected to continue until April 2021, it is hard to see Microsoft competing with Sony.

Will the PS5 Be November's Best-Selling Console in the US?

We will have to wait until November has passed, but given these strong sales figures, we may well see the PlayStation 5 becoming the best-selling console for that month.

This does mean that Sony will need to topple Nintendo off its best-selling console perch, which it has held for 23 months in the US, the Switch proving immensely popular.

However, Nintendo and many Nintendo retailers are fully entering into the Black Friday spirit. So, with so many Switch deals to be had, we may well see the Japanese Mario creator retaining its crown.
