The PS5's bold design caused a bit of a split within the gaming community. Some loved it, others felt it was alien, unlike a games console.

Now, a new Sony patent suggests an official layer of customization to its ninth-gen console. Let's see why and explore what it could mean.

Sony's Got Itself a PS5 Faceplate Patent

Recently, Sony filed a patent for its PS5 faceplates. The claim of this patent—which OP Attack first spotted—says it's for "the ornamental design for the cover for (an) electronic device, as shown and described". The patent also shows schematics for the PS5's faceplate.

Why a patent? Well, Sony's had run-ins in the past with unofficial PS5 faceplate brands. Faceplate companies have tried to bypass Sony's copyright claims.

A patent lets Sony crack down on these companies, despite the good ideas they might have—seriously, black PS5 faceplates look so, so good. It also gives the company enough freedom to release new PS5 faceplate designs without competition.

So, while this isn't any proof that Sony is going to release new PS5 faceplates, the patent does suggest that there will be some official customization options. And what better way than different PS5 faceplate designs or skins?

New PS5 Faceplate Colors and Designs?

To support the theory that Sony is looking to create new official PS5 faceplates, the company did release some aesthetic black and red DualSense controllers for the PS5. But Sony might go beyond just your standard color options.

We've seen unique PS4 designs for certain titles, such as God of War, The Last of Us Part II, and Marvel's Spider-Man. This patent could also suggest some sweet PS5 skins for upcoming titles like God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West…or perhaps Marvel's Wolverine? A Wolverine-inspired PS5 could be a thing of beauty.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, all it looks like right now is that Sony's legally covered the PS5's faceplates.

Play on Your PS5 in Style

Sony's patent strongly indicates that the company is looking to give players some new PS5 faceplates. Sony could also go a step further to give us some truly unique PS5 designs.

So, if you haven't got a PS5 yet, know that the future looks encouraging for the console. In both its software and hardware.
