Emojis add personality to text, and Gboard's predictive emoji feature takes it a step further by saving you time and effort, effortlessly finding the perfect emoji to complement your words. However, if you heavily rely on predictive emojis, encountering issues with their proper functioning can be incredibly frustrating.
Below, we take a look at the different solutions you can try to get those predictive emojis up and running again.
1. Ensure the Predictive Emoji Feature Is Enabled
If you're not seeing predictive emoji suggestions—one of the many useful features in Gboard—the first thing we recommend doing is ensuring that this feature is actually enabled. Here is how you can do that:
- Tap on the settings icon on the keyboard. If you cannot locate it, tap on the arrow icon on the keyboard to access it.
- Scroll down in the following screen to locate the Emojis, stickers, and GIFS option and select it.
- In the "Suggestions while typing" section, ensure that the toggle for Emojis is enabled. If it is disabled, turn it on and check if the issue is resolved.3 Images
2. Clear the Gboard Cache
Over time, Gboard accumulates temporary data, like settings and preferences, in its cache. This data can sometimes get corrupted or become outdated, causing unexpected glitches that can lead to issues like the one at hand.
To check if this is the case in your situation, try clearing the Gboard cache. Here is how to do it. Some of the menus may be slightly different on your phone, but the general instructions are the same on all Android devices.
- Launch Settings on your phone and head over to Apps (or sometimes Apps > App management).2 Images

Now relaunch the Gboard app and see if your predictive emojis have started working again.
3. Ensure the System and Gboard Are Up-to-Date
You can also consider updating your system or Gboard if updates are available, as they frequently incorporate bug fixes and compatibility improvements. These updates can address temporary underlying issues that may hinder the proper functioning of the predictive emoji feature, fixing the error.
To update the Gboard, follow these steps:
- Open the Gboard page in the Play Store.
- If there are updates available for the app, you should see an Update button with the app. Tap on it and wait for the updates to install.
As well as this, it's also worth checking to see if you can update your Android phone, which may also fix any problems that you are experiencing.
4. Reset Gboard
If you have exhausted all other options and predictive emojis are still not working, we recommend resetting Gboard to its default state. This can effectively eliminate any misconfigurations or conflicts that may be causing issues with the predictive emoji functionality.
However, note that resetting Gboard will remove any personalized settings or preferences you have configured, so you may need to adjust them after the reset.
Follow these steps to proceed:
- Navigate to Settings > Apps > Gboard.
- Tap on Storage usage and select Clear data.
- Tap on Delete in the confirmation prompt to proceed.2 Images
Hopefully, this will fix the predictive emoji issue for good.
Communicate With Predictive Emojis
Emojis play a significant role in modern communication, allowing you to express your emotions more easily in digital conversations. The solutions listed above should help you overcome the challenge of predictive emojis not working on Gboard.
To avoid this issue in the future, keep your apps updated, clear the cache periodically, and ensure that the settings within Gboard align with your preferences.
