What is the power consumption of a desktop PC and its individual hardware components?
2011-12-26 17:02:00
Hello, that all depends on the sum of all components in your computer. There is not a definite answer for that. Every computer is different, byt you could do is start researching how much power your motherboard, CPU, harddrives, graphics card, CD/DVD, memory, etc. installed in your computer. Once you find the requirements for each, you will have a better idea. Keep in mind that once you find out all the power requirements, you might want to make sure your PSU can power them with ease...if not you might want to get a better power supply.

Well, it depends on all the components inside or connected to it and how much utilized they are.The best and most accurate method would be to look up the specifications for each individual component of the system. For the CPU you can always orient yourself by the
TDP (Thermal Design Power)
. While it's not the actual power consumption the number won't be much different. Overall it's usually around 100W for modern desktop CPUs at full load. For the graphics card you have to be specific. An IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor) for example won't draw much additional power since it is utilizing the CPU power ~ maybe 20W more. Dedicated graphics cards on the other hand are stated up to 250W consumption at full utilization.Hard Drive ... 5-10WOptical Drive ... 1-5WSound Card ... ~15W for a dedicated sound cardRAM memory ... ~500mW (can be ignored)USB ... depends on each connected device, specification is 500-900mA at 5V, calculating with 1A you have 1A*5V = 5W max. per device.
