If you're a fan of Pokémon Go, then it will interest you to know that John Hanke, Niantic's top dog, has teased some new AR glasses from the company...

Niantic Reveals New AR Glasses

Well, Niantic hasn't exactly "revealed" the glasses. Rather, John Hanke has teased a portion of the frames on Twitter. They're definitely Niantic glasses, though, as they bear the logo on the side.

So, from what we can see in this very limited image, the glasses will feature a speaker on the underside of the arm (much like the Fauna audio eyewear we tested recently). The frames also appear to be constructed from a mixture of metal, plastic (or acetate) and fabric, with the Niantic logo in red on the arm...

What Can Niantic's New AR Glasses Do?

Well, right now, we don't know. This is the first time anyone has seen evidence of Niantic working on an in-house AR headset.

However, given the nature of the glasses and the fact that Pokémon Go is an AR game, we can be pretty sure the two will work in unison, should these glasses ever come to fruition.

Given the speaker on the bottom of the glasses' arms, we can make an educated guess that this is an all-in-one headset, so you'll be able to listen to the sounds your game makes without wearing headphones.

When Will Niantic Release the AR Glasses?

It looks like these are still very much in development, so it is difficult to gauge when the glasses will be available to buy.

As such, we can't speculate on the release date for the mixed reality device. We know that Niantic currently has several other ideas in development, including a Pikmin AR game in conjunction with Nintendo.

What Else Is Niantic Working On?

As mentioned, we have a potential Pikmin game in the pipeline. This is likely to follow a similar form to that of Pokémon Go; that being an AR title that allows you to interact with the little critters.

We've also recently seen Hanke making use of Microsoft's new Hololens, which (in the proof-of-concept test video) overlays Pokémon onto the surroundings so Hanke can interact with them.

All exciting news for the future of mixed and virtual reality.
