Google's Pixel 7a is still likely to be many months away from launch but the leaks and rumors about what to expect are in full flow. New renders have now given us a first glimpse of what the mid-range handset is likely to look like—and it looks very similar to the Pixel 6a, combined with some of the modern touches of the Pixel 7 series.

Pixel 7a Design and Specs

The renders come from the renowned Twitter leaker OnLeaks, in conjunction with Smartprix, so although all leaks and rumors should be taken with a pinch of salt, these do come from a reliable source.

They show that the Pixel 7a will have dimensions of 152.4 x 72.9 x 9.0mm, which makes it just marginally taller, wider, and thicker than the 6a, while retaining the squared corners and somewhat prominent chin that were present on that device. The camera hump is redesigned in line with the style used on the Pixel 7 series.

The other details provided are in line with what we know about the Pixel 7a already. The 7a looks set to be the first a-series phone to have a 90Hz display, a new camera sensor, and wireless charging (albeit pegged at a snail-like 5W). That's in addition to the same second-generation Tensor chip and new modem used in the other Pixel 7 models.

There are lots of details still missing, like the exact camera specs, the size of the battery, and the price. That means there's still room for compromises to be made, which we'd assume are inevitable.

With the details reported so far, the Pixel 7a looks very competitive against the Pixel 7, to the point where it's hard to see many people opting for the more expensive model. The 6a was already a pretty appealing phone at a great price, and the new display, improved modem, and wireless charging support look set to address the main complaints users had about it.

The Pixel 7a Should Launch in May

Google announced the Pixel 6a at its I/O developer event in May, so it seems likely that the company will unveil the 7a at the 2023 event. The exact dates haven't yet been set.

But that's still some time away. If you're in the market for a new device in the meantime, the Pixel 7 continues to be one of the best Android phones around, holding up well even in competition with the likes of the iPhone 14.
