I think that my motherboard is on the way out. Is there a piece of software that checks the health of my PC's hardware? What would you recommend?

AIDA is the way to go. been using it for many years now. It used to be called Everest before. Has a host of features that can monitor activity, and check the status of all H/W.

You could use GPU-Z for the graphics card, CPU-Z for the CPU and SpeedFan for monitoring temps.

your best bet is Ultimate Boot CD http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/, However, I recomend the regular and not the previously mentioned Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, But your choice. The interface takes some getting used to, but It can test virtually everything, and is overall amazing. Of course, you do need a CD to burn first...

There can be a couple of different things going on. First off why would you think that you mobo is going bad, it can be simple thing such as you having to many services running to just simple updates. A little more information could narrow down what could be causing you lack of speed or what ever symptoms you might be experiencing. A little more explanation of problems would help to narrow down the issues that you are having

I use Futuremark's 3D Vantage and 3D Mark 11 to test my hardware. I also use them along with CPUZ's Hardware Monitor to test my desktop's cooling systems.

What bit system do you have? I prefer AIDA32, it is professional system information, diagnostics and benchmarking program running on Win32 platforms. If you have 64bit PC, there is also Aida64

SiSoftware's Sandra 2012 (Lite) is a diagnostic package that does a good job of evaluating hardware. The Lite version is free. They have commercial versions for home, professional and enterprise use as well starting aroung $60 and going into the thousands.

You can always try CPU-Z to keep track of all H/W activities. Though it might not give you future predictions about something going to fail.
