Phishing (fish'ing) is the act of sending a fraudulent email to someone, falsely claiming to be an established and often trusted business or institution in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. In most cases the email directs the recipient to visit a website where they are asked to update personal information, such as username and password, credit card, social security, and bank account numbers. The website, however, is bogus and set up only to steal the victim's information. go to a phishing Web site - which will look just like the Web site of the company being phished. Once on the phishers Web site they hope to obtain your account, financial, credit and even identity information. Phishing can not be explained that easily in short answers .i would highly recommend going to the following web sites , to learn about phishing and its techniques in detail and how to prevent it , by seeing practical examples via various tests--Sonic Wall ( http://www.sonicwall.com/furl/phishing/ )Verisign Anti Phishing ( https://www.phish-no-phish.com/default.aspx )Netriplex ( http://www.netriplex.com/phishfraud/phishing_test.aspx )test authenticity of a suspected against a huge repository of Phishing Links , Phishtank ( https://www.phishtank.com/ )

Phishing is the process of creating pages that look similar to the original page, in order to manipulate users into logging in thinking it was the actual website. For example, I may create a page to look exactly identical to your back and send you a shortened or similar link to the page. If you use BankOfAmerica.com, I may name my site BankOfAmerlca.freehost. com and you would glance at the link and think it was the site, not expecting to be manipulated. You would then login and send your credentials to my server, rather than AmericanBank. I would then redirect you to your actual bank so you thought it was just an error. This can be done to pretty much any site. Phishing is highly illegal.
