Microsoft is set to deliver the biggest update to Outlook for more than a decade, delivering "arguably the biggest change to Outlook for Windows since its initial release in 1997."

The changes center on how Outlook manages shared calendars, bringing substantial reliability improvements, and decreasing sync times between Outlook clients, helping millions of businesses and organizations worldwide.

Outlook Calendars Make Sharing Easier

The big Outlook update is, at its core, a major overhaul for the shared calendar feature. As one of the most useful and well-used Outlook features, using calendar can at times be a frustrating experience, especially when working in large teams.

On its official Tech Community blog, the Microsoft Exchange team elaborated on the changes.

This is one of those improvements that should be invisible because it eliminates issues but doesn't change the core product functionality. calendars will sync faster, and we have eliminated any reliability issues when managing a calendar. Delegates might only notice that things are smoother but no specific, obvious changes

All of the changes are taking place behind the scenes. For those users expecting a big visual overhaul, you'll have to keep waiting. Though hopefully not for too long, as Microsoft has repeatedly dropped hints and even talked about a big visual update for Windows 10, set to arrive in the second half of 2021.

Back to Outlook and its shiny new calendar. The upgraded shared calendar has actually been up and running for a little while. Users with Outlook on the web, Outlook for Mac, and Outlook's mobile apps have been testing and previewing the feature.

Only now, upgraded calendar sync is ready to roll out to full production, launching to every Outlook for Windows (that's Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Office) user.

Faster Calendar Sync for Outlook Users

Heralding Outlook calendar sync as "the biggest change to Outlook" for over a decade seems a little wild. Many users will not feel that this update deserves such a lofty title, that something this exuberant should accompany sweeping visual overhauls and incredible features upgrades.

But, the proof is in the pudding, as they say. Making it easier and faster to sync Outlook calendars is a winning upgrade for millions of users worldwide. Calendar sync isn't something that only big businesses rely upon, either. The upgraded Outlook calendar sync is something that every Outlook user can make use of instantly, which is good news for everyone.
