If you want to put in the glasses spacer, wash your faceplate, upgrade your strap, or just learn a little more about your Quest 2, it can help to know how to take it apart.

Taking the Quest 2 apart isn’t hard, but there are definitely ways to save yourself some stress and strain. Let's take a look.

How to Remove the Quest 2 Faceplate

The faceplate for the Quest 2 is designed to be easy to clean. But, that doesn’t mean that you want to clean it while it’s still connected to the rest of the headset. If you’re just doing a surface cleaning, clean the faceplate with the same cloth you use to clean the lenses.

Otherwise, it’s got to come off. You also have to remove this faceplate to put in the eyeglasses spacer that the Quest 2 ships with.

If you want to solve the situation with brute force, you can just kind of pull the faceplate off of the headset. But, this isn’t the gentle way to go about it. The Quest 2 is the most affordable headset out there, and you know Meta is going to churn out a better one any day now, but that doesn’t mean you want to break things when you don't have to.

There are three main points where the faceplate connects with the headset: the middle of the top of the headset near where the over-head strap connects, and on either side of the nose. Popping out each of these connections individually is easier on your headset and makes you less likely to break or drop anything.

If you’re putting in the eyeglasses spacer, this goes in between the headset and the faceplate. Even if you don’t wear eyeglasses, playing with the spacer when you first set up your Oculus Quest 2 can help with light occlusion problems and generally get a more comfortable fit.

How to Remove the Quest 2 Strap

Taking off the strap is scarier because the strap connects to the little arms that come off of the headset. These aren’t just little arms that hold the strap, that’s also where the Quest 2’s onboard speakers are. So, if you go too hard trying to tear your strap off, you can damage some integral hardware.

Carefully removing the strap from the Quest 2 headset

Place a thumb on the outside of the strap, just over where the thick part of the strap overlaps with the arm. There’s a thinner section of the plastic part of the strap that extends past the arm on the inside of the strap. With your thumb in place, use your other hand to push this part of the strap out from the headset. You should notice it pop out of place.

After this point has been disconnected, you can slide the rest of the strap toward the headset off of the arm and do the same on the other side. Once both sides of the strap are disconnected, the over-head strap will still be connecting the back of the strap to the headset.

The Quest 2 overhead strap, velcro separated

This is a simple Velcro tab that can be undone and slid out. The tricky part is remembering that replacing this part of the strap is a lot easier if you do it before putting the spacer and faceplate back on.

Be Careful With Mods and Accessories

Now you know how to remove the original Quest 2 strap from the Quest 2!

Other straps work differently. If you have an Elite strap from Meta or a third-party strap, you might have to play around with other approaches or find other resources. Just be careful with your headset and if you think something will cause damage, stop doing it.
