It's back to the doghouse for Spot, Boston Dynamics' robot dog. The NYPD started employing the help of the dog-like robot in 2020, but its time on the force has been cut short.

The NYPD Puts Digidog Down

The four-legged robot, nicknamed Digidog by the NYPD, has been sent back to Boston Dynamics. According to a report by The New York Times, the NYPD terminated its $94,000 contract with the company, which was set to end in August 2021.

Digidog's demise can be attributed to current tensions between civilians and the police. John Miller, the NYPD's deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism said that the robot became a "target" for people to use in arguments about race and surveillance.

Many criticized the NYPD for deploying the robot dog, as its militarized look can be intimidating and may worsen relations with the police. During its time with the NYPD, Digidog was primarily used for barricade and hostage situations.

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio told The New York Times that he was "glad the Digidog was put down," and noted that "it's creepy, alienating, and sends the wrong message to New Yorkers."

What's Next for Spot?

Miller noted that Digidog may eventually make a return to the police force, that is if the police find that it's more effective than other devices. But for now, Spot will likely find a home in construction sites and hazardous environments, where it can be used as an inspection tool.
