At the WWDC 2021 presentation, Apple released some fantastic features coming to the next iOS update, dropping in fall this year.

Apple Maps also received several touch-ups to make it easier and more convenient to use, along with aesthetic upgrades to make your experience more visually pleasant.

More Detailed Directions

You're going to see a lot more routes and lanes when you're navigating with Apple Maps now. If you're driving a car, you'll see a more significant number of lanes and streets on your app.

Along with that, people on buses, taxis, bicycles, and even on foot will now have access to a specific Lanes view to find specific lanes just for them. Pedestrians will be able to see crosswalks as well.

A new navigating feature also allows drivers to easily move through complicated overlapping intersections in a safe and efficient manner. Apple has said that the added details will not only make Apple Maps a better option but also improve safety and security when you're on the road.

Aesthetic Additions

Apple added features to increase usability, but it also made sure to focus on some attractive aesthetics to make the whole experience more visually pleasing.

The main highlight is the inclusion of a night mode in Apple Maps that causes the infrastructure on the maps to be surrounded by a moonlit glow along with midnight blue hues.

Along with the new night mode, there are tiny additions that give Apple Maps a fresh layout: brilliant road colors, bright labels, and custom icons for famous landmarks.

Apple showcased these at WWDC21 on landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, and the Ferry Building.

Transit Riders

If you're a public transit user, you can find nearby stations quickly and can pin regular routes with the upcoming Maps updates.

If you take one particular route every day, you can pin it on your Apple Maps.

Have an Apple Watch? Even better. You can track your journey on your Apple Watch without having to take your phone out. Your watch will also give you notifications when you reach a station or when it's time to leave, making your experience a whole lot smoother.

Still fear getting off at the wrong station? Take a few pictures of the landmarks around your destination to pin them on your Apple Maps.

Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality is slowly rising in popularity, and Apple has revealed a steady stream of AR-related updates lately, including the addition of AR elements to clips and videos. The feature is now highlighted in the iOS 15 update.

If you're traveling on foot and want precise directions with narrow turns and crosswalks, this feature can help you out. You can use your iPhone to scan nearby buildings and infrastructure and get walking directions to help with navigation.

Availability in More Locations

While last redesign of Apple Maps was initially available in the US, UK, Canada, and Ireland, Apple has now added more locations to the list. It is now available in Portugal and Spain, and it will soon be available in Italy and Australia.

Apple Maps now has tons of additional car lanes, taxi lanes, bike lanes, and pedestrian crosswalks to help with accurate navigation. Along with functionality, the app also comes in a pretty moonlit visual, along with having brighter roads and vivid labels. The addition of AR features was the cherry on top of the cake.

There has been a long-standing argument comparing Apple Maps and Google Maps. While Apple Maps still has a long way to go, and is not available globally, the features announced at WWDC21 made sure to give Apple Maps a significant boost.
