Being a dog owner is so rewarding, but also comes with a lot of responsibility. You need to provide food, training, exercise, and veterinary care. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of iPhone apps that can help you order dog food, book a dog walker, access pet first aid advice, and more.

Whether you’ve adopted a puppy recently or you’re a veteran pet owner, these apps will help you have more fun with your canine companion.

1. Wag!

Wag is a convenient app that allows you to hire a vetted dog walker right from your phone. You can choose to schedule a walk or request a walker right away. The app offers express 20-minute walks, a standard 30-minute walk, or a deluxe 60-minute walk. Drop-in visits and overnight care are also available.

The ASAP walk option makes this app a great choice for short-notice needs, like when you unexpectedly have to work late or wake up sick and can’t walk the dog. There's also GPS tracking so you can see where they are walking and know exactly when your pet is returned home.

The walkers also take a photo of your pet, provide a summary of the walk, and record whether your dog relieved itself on the walk.

2. Rover

Rover is another app that allows you to search for and book local pet sitters and dog walkers. This one does require more advanced notice than Wag!, but it’s a great option if you’re looking for a reoccurring dog walker or pet sitter. With Rover, you can search through local pet sitters and schedule an introductory meeting to get to know the walker and make sure that they are a good fit for your dog.

The pet care professionals set their own prices and service lists. You can browse by distance, rating, availability, and services offered. Payment, booking, and communication with your walker or sitter is all manageable within the app.

The Learn menu offers resources to learn first aid for a long list of potential veterinary issues. This includes wound care, choking, CPR, and poisoning. The app gives first aid steps to use in the event of each veterinary issue or emergency, along with an FAQ section.

The Prepare menu gives you preparedness tips for travel, natural disasters, surgery, and what to do if your dog gets lost.

The Emergency menu gives you access to emergency tools to access veterinary care, plus emergency first aid instructions to use in the interim. You can add your preferred vet office or pet hospital number to the app to make use of the quick Call Vet option in the app. There's also a Vet Hospital Locator to help you find the nearest veterinary hospitals. An Early Warning Signs menu helps you check your dog’s symptoms and find out what health concerns they may indicate.

Lastly, the Quizzes menu lets you take quizzes on what you have learned to test your first aid knowledge. To put skills like these to use, check out some other apps that let you do good in the world.
