I need to make room on my laptop hard drive. To do this, I can move files and programs to my external hard drive. Just moving files I can handle. But I'm a little scared to move software. Is there something to use to help me move them, so that they will still work or do I need to uninstall them and reinstall?

Hey Lavonna,Moving files from one drive to another shouldn't be an issue however this won't work for all software. When you install software it will write custom entries to Windows registry and possibly some other places, unless it's portable. Therefore, you may only move portable software.

Hibefore starting read about NTFS junction points http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS_junction_pointProgram files are registered when loaded so just moving won't work if you don't want to install them. The only way of getting everything and still be operational on new system is to use Ghost or a program like it. Once transferred, you can uninstall from existing.Pc Mover http://cms.laplink.com//pcmover/index.htmlTry Change of Address 2, not sure if it will work on all windows!http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,7822,00.aspApplication Mover this tool can relocate programs to another path on the same hard drive or to a different hard drive entirely. It will also adjust shortcut paths, so that your existing shortcuts will still work, as they will reference the new disk location.http://www.funduc.com/amquestions.htmMoving Documents and Settings to RAID1http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Features/intelmatrixich6r/5.htmlor0. Make a complete backup! 1. Boot into Safe Mode and log in as a different administrator account than the one you want to use. (Make sure it's an Administrator, of course!)2. Rename the folder that houses your primary user profile to, say, Temp.3. Create an empty folder with the same name the folder you just renamed had.4. Use the Disk Manager to mount the new volume onto the empty folder.5. Move the contents of your profile into the now-mounted folder.6. Reboot and try it out.If you are not sure what you are doing thn the best option is uninstall and reinstall. GoodLuck
