Depending on what you want to monitor and how many machines/devices are involved, you may be able to do what you need with the built-in tools. If you are adamant about using 3rd party tools, the ideas above may work for you.  You can also check out Spiceworks (http://www.spiceworks.com/) for a free yet comprehensive network monitoring solution.

For general monitoring of networked devices, servers and services I suggest something like Nagios. http://www.nagios.org/Another great tool I have used in the past is InterMapper. It is very easy to use, very visual and able to monitor all kinds of things. It is very customizeable in how things are displayed and what you want to be warned about. When you are done setting things up and adding your devices you basically have a Map of your entire network where you can see all activities and problems right away. One downside is that it's commercial only.http://www.intermapper.com/Other then that you have to be more specific what you want to monitor (e.g. Exchange, POP/SMTP, Network Shares)
