If you're a fan of Microsoft's Surface devices, make sure you're free on October 12, 2022. The company has confirmed that it's going to host an event about its product range on the date, albeit it has kept quiet about what, exactly, it's going to announce.

A New Surface Event on the Horizon

As reported by Neowin, the company plans to reveal its plans for the Surface range on October 12, 2022, at 10 am EST. You can head over to the official Microsoft Surface event page if you like, but it's pretty sparse; all it has is a message to "save the date."

Fortunately, Neowin believes it has a good idea as to what Microsoft will discuss on the day:

According to rumors, this year, Microsoft will show the 9th-gen Surface Pro with Intel and ARM processors, the 5th-gen Surface Laptop, possibly a long-overdue Surface Studio refresh, and new accessories. There are also speculations about Microsoft preparing a gaming-focused Surface Laptop with 12th Gen Intel processors and Nvidia 3000 Series graphics cards.

A Revolutionary New Surface Product?

Of particular interest in Neowin's statement is the rumor of a Surface laptop with a gaming focus. Usually, the Surface range has been reserved for productivity and work. For instance, the Surface Laptop Go 2 is meant to be a portable workstation, with some nice additional features like a touchscreen.

As such, the potential for a gaming laptop is surprising. There are plenty of pros and cons when buying a gaming laptop, and if Microsoft does go down this route, it needs to adapt to these pretty quickly. Especially since there is plenty of competition in the gaming laptop market that has designed beefy laptops for far longer.

If the rumor does turn out to be true, Microsoft has the huge challenge of convincing gamers to ditch their brand staples and purchase a device in a range usually associated with productivity and work. As such, we'll have to see what the company can announce with this new gaming machine to encourage people to buy it.

Much More Than on the Surface

While the Surface range has always been associated with productivity, that may soon change. If the rumors are right, there's going to be a brand new range of Surface devices announced on October 12, 2022, that will be of huge interest to gamers.
