A little while ago, Microsoft expressed interest in purchasing Discord, but then both sides fell silent on how things are progressing. Now, Discode has finally broken the silence, and it turns out that the company got cold feet about being bought.

Why Did Discord Walk Away From Microsoft?

In case you need to catch up, Discord is a popular messaging and video call app that originally targeted gamers. However, the ability for anyone to make a free, niche community allowed people of all walks of life to make a Discord server, chat with friends, and host voice calls.

Since its creation, Discord has been platform-agnostic and independent from big companies. Then, Microsoft stepped forward to buy Discord, causing some concern amongst users who didn't want the fingers of big businesses to creep into their independent social spaces.

Then, as reported by TechCrunch, the deal is now off and Microsoft will not acquire Discord. It's quite a big surprise, as the social platform was valued at $10 billion at the time talks began.

So, why did Discord leave such a huge stack of money on the table? Well, it appears the company believes it can do better; a lot better.

There's definitely proof that Discord can thrive without an acquisition. Its value doubled in the past half-year, and its value is projected to keep growing throughout 2021.

As such, Discord believes it can strike it out alone. It's even considering getting its own Initial Public Offering (IPO), which means that it'll open the doors for the general public to buy stocks from it.

Not only that, but turning down Microsoft means that the platform can remain independent from any specific platform or company. This may have changed under Microsoft's reign, as they may have given exclusive bonuses to Xbox and PC players and left everyone else in the dust.

As such, if you're a Discord user who appreciates the independence of the platform, you'll be pleased to know that the service shares the same values as you do. However, be ready for more companies to express their interest in the platform as Discord becomes bigger and bigger.

A New Era for Discord

Discord has walked away from a $10 billion deal from Microsoft, but it's not without its reasons. We'll have to watch Discord as it continues to grow and see if this choice was the better option of the two options.

If you're just getting to grips with Discord, there's a lot to get your head around. However, after you've learned the basics, you'll be joining servers and chatting like a champ.
