Microsoft said in its latest quarterly earnings release that the number of Microsoft 365 subscribers has increased to 50.2 million from January through March 2021.

This is the first time Microsoft 365 Consumer has surpassed 50 million subscribers.

Microsoft 365 Now Has 50.2 Million Subscribers

That's a notable 27 percent jump in Microsoft 365 subscribers over the same quarter a year ago. Furthermore, Microsoft 365 users have generated more than 38 billion collaboration minutes in a single day this quarter, which is quite impressive.

These achievements have helped the company increase its Office Consumer products and cloud services revenue by five percent in the March quarter.

Strong Microsoft 365 Consumer Subscription Revenue

Office commercial products and cloud services revenue increased 14 percent driven by Office 365 commercial revenue growth of 22 percent. Microsoft also said there are now nearly 300 million paid Office 365 seats. Butt that's hardly the whole story.

Microsoft Teams saw increased engagement as many people continue to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, Microsoft Teams now has an impressive 145 million daily active users, which is almost double what it was a year ago.

"Over a year into the pandemic, digital adoption curves aren’t slowing down. They’re accelerating, and it’s just the beginning," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a statement.

These and other revelations were made in Microsoft's earnings report for the three-month period ending March 31, 2021, available on the Microsoft Investor Relations website.

Microsoft also reported strong growth in other divisions.

Microsoft’s Gaming Division Is Booming

For instance, Windows OEM revenue was up 10 percent, with over 1.3 billion monthly active devices using the software, while revenue in the Surface division shot up up 12 percent.

Gaming revenue spiked 50 percent to $3.53 billion during the quarter.

The company saw a 30 percent increase in Minecraft users and record engagement on the Xbox front, with a very impressive 232 percent increase in Xbox hardware revenue due to continuing strong demand for the Xbox Series X and S consoles.

Moreover, Microsoft enjoyed a 34 percent year-over-year increase in Xbox-related content and services, driven by strong software sales from third parties and continuing growth of the Xbox Game Pass subscriptions and first-party titles.

What Is Microsoft Office 365?

Office 365 was rebranded Microsoft 365 in April 2020, with updated subscription plans and new tools for families. The available subscription plans now include Microsoft 365 Personal (previously Office 365 Personal) and Microsoft 365 Family (previously Office 365).

Microsoft 365 Personal ($6.99/month or $69.99/year) is for one person across all their devices. Microsoft 365 Family ($9.99/month or $99.99/year) provides the same benefits for up to six people in a family, on all their devices.

Both plans include access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, plus Access and Publisher on Windows only, as well as 1TB of OneDrive storage and 60 minutes of Skype credit every month.
