Luminar Neo has an extension called Upscale AI that enlarges low-resolution images. It allows you to make larger files for printing and sharing without relying on third-party software. And it's really easy to use.

Where to Get Upscale AI

Upscale AI is an extension in the Luminar Neo creative suite. There are two ways to get it, either as part of the annual $59 Luminar Neo subscription or as an add-on for $49. It's worth noting that if you purchased a Luminar Neo subscription prior to August 16, 2022, then all extensions will be included for free for as long as you subscribe.

In order to find Upscale AI, you need to open Luminar Neo as a stand-alone program. It won't work as a plugin in programs like Photoshop or Lightroom.

You can locate Upscale AI in Catalog in the Extensions menu at the top-right if you haven't already installed it.

If you're new, here's everything you need to know about Luminar Neo to help get you started editing your photos.

How to Enlarge Your Photos With Upscale AI

It's really easy to use Upscale AI. We'll demonstrate using a very small JPEG file that's 640 x 427 pixels. You'll have the option of upscaling to 2x, 4x, or 6x.

  1. Open Luminar Neo as a stand-alone program.

  2. Click on Add Photos and then click on Add Image.
    Step 2 Add Photos
  3. Select your file and click Open.
    Step 3 Choose File
  4. Click Catalog at the top of the menu.
    Step 4 Click on Catalog
  5. Drag the image down to the Upscale AI box at the bottom where it says Drag photo here to start.
Step 5 Drag Photo to start
  6. Choose the amount you want to upscale your image by. For this example, we chose 6x. Then hit Upscale.
Step 6 choose size and click Upscale

It will take a few moments to upscale. Once the task is complete, a copy of your upscaled image will be placed in the Upscale folder. The upscaled image file name will also be changed, with image_upscale added to the end of the original file name to avoid confusion.

Filename changes to upscale

The file has been upscaled to a 3840 x 2562 pixel 5 MB file. If we zoom in we can see there are some distorted pixels from the upscaling, but it's not too bad. There is slight distortion with the 2x and 4x versions too, but if shared as social media posts on Instagram or Facebook, it will likely go unnoticed.

You can transfer your newly upscaled image from your computer to your phone using Luminar Share.
