Smiley noted - but...It seems that comments are moderated - at least from unregistered users. That is great, it's one of the things that makes MUO a good place to be, You should see the GiffGaff forums where people also get points for postings but are unmoderated, so many responses that add no value whatsoever (like "I agree") that useful contributions become impossible to find.So if there is some moderation going on, is it not possible to give the moderators the power to allocate points? Surely a considered, useful, on-topic posting is "worth" more than a one liner.Something like 0 (or even a minus) for "bad behaviour" like a "me too"/off topic entry (or SHOUTING!?), 5 for minor but positive contribution, more (variable) for a quality answer, 5 for the thread starter marking as resolved. (Oh, and not seen any here, but points taken away for abuse/insults/spam). If the thread starter could identify a particular answer as the resolution then whoever wrote that answer might get a small bonus too.

It's incredibly time intensive to moderate comments and scan those that were auto-approved. To assign points individually would literally be a nightmare. Besides, it would probably not be more fair than the current system. In the long term we will change the system and base points on other factors.

Rob,Yes, generally points are earned for all published comments. In this particular case it looks like there was a technical issue which led to the multiple posts. Thanks for pointing it out to me, I removed the duplicates. We do monitor comments and spam comments posted merely to abuse the rewards system. Those people run the risk of being excluded from earning points.

Probably a bit out of context Tina, but someone just answered a one worder to my question in the link saying iCloud. Now cannot comment if the person did it on purpose just to collect points or he is genuinely unaware but was trying to help. Bottomline, he still got 10 points for as out of context irrelevant answer. Now what is the monitoring methodology, MakeUseOf ensures for such situations.

We delete a lot of comments after they were posted. Not all comments automatically get points. People who offend repeatedly get blocked from having their comments auto-approved, so essentially they lose our trust. Generally, comments are auto-approved if the comment contains no URL, but this privilege can be revoked.
