LastPass, the popular password manager, is undergoing a big change. Soon, those who use the service for free will only be able to do so on computers or mobiles, but not both—unless they pay.

It means that LastPass is no longer an attractive choice as a free password manager. In a world where we constantly switch between computers and mobiles, having a password manager that only works for one device type is useless.

What's Changing in LastPass Free?

As announced on the LastPass blog, changes are afoot for the free version of the password manager.

Currently, LastPass Free lets you use the service across all your devices. Whether you use LastPass on your computer, tablet, or mobile, it doesn't matter. All of that is free. That's due to change on March 16, 2021.

From then, LastPass Free will only include unlimited devices of one type: computers or mobiles.

For LastPass, computers are classed as any desktop or laptop, while mobiles are mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches.

When you first log in to LastPass on March 16, you will need to set your active device type.

For example, if you choose computers as your device type, you will be able to use LastPass on your desktop and laptop devices. However, if you want to use LastPass on any mobile device then you'll need to upgrade to LastPass Premium.

In a way, this is reverting to the LastPass of old. Being able to use LastPass for free across desktop and mobile only became available in 2015. Before that, you had to pay for mobile support.

LastPass Support Is Also Changing

LastPass is also changing how it provides support. From May 17, 2021, email support will only be available to Premium and Family customers.

Free users will be stuck with the help articles available on the LastPass support website, or they can ask for help within the LastPass community.

Everyone should use a password manager. Chances are, you need to use it on desktop and mobile. LastPass knows this and are banking on users upgrading to the paid service, which is currently 25% off for $27/year.

Is It Time to Change Password Manager?

If you use LastPass Free, it's likely that this has made you consider switching. If so, there are many other great password managers out there that you can use on all your devices for free.

Then again, maybe you think it's fair that you pay a small amount to LastPass in support of the service it provides.
