Now that the average internet user has dozens, if not hundreds, of logins, having a secure and reliable password manager is essential. However, not all password managers are equal. Some of them trade your privacy for security.

One of the biggest password managers on the market, LastPass, has announced that it's breaking away from its parent company, LogMeIn.

What changes will this decision carry, and should you still be using LastPass?

LastPass Is Becoming a Standalone Company

LastPass is a password manager software, browser extension, and mobile app that was first released back in 2008. It was bought by the software provider LogMeIn in 2015.

LogMeIn is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and cloud-based company that offers a variety of services for businesses and individuals, such as password managers. Being owned by LogMeIn meant that LastPass adopted the same privacy policy when it comes to user data.

Privacy Issues

According to LogMeIn’s privacy policy, it reserves the right to collect your behavioral data and any non-identifying information.

It's able to link your IP address to the sites you log into using LastPass. This also includes your hardware specifications, location, and device settings, all of which it may share with affiliated, third-party companies for the purposes of user analysis and customized ad campaigns.

What Will Change for LastPass Users?

By becoming a standalone company, LastPass is able to determine its own privacy policy and the type of data it collects from users, but any changes to the privacy policy aren't yet public. Still, you can expect nothing less than excellent desktop and mobile app functionality.

In a post on The LastPass Blog, the company announced that the team is working on various new features to roll out in the upcoming year. Furthermore, it's working on improving current capabilities such as faster login filling that’s seamless across apps, websites, and browsers.

Are You Sticking With LastPass?

If you're not convinced by this move, there are plenty of LastPass alternatives to explore.

LastPass is one of the most secure and user-friendly password managers out there, and it remains worth a shot if you're in the market for a password manager.
