The Krita Foundation has announced a new version of the open-source painting program Krita. This version builds on the program's grassroots success as a competitor to proprietary creative offerings from Adobe. And all in time for World Creativity Day.

Krita 5.0.5 Arrives With Lots of Bug Fixes

The new version fixes numerous bugs to improve performance and security. The official Krita blog post announcing the latest release notes that users paying attention to version numbers hadn't lost track. "Some stores, if they think a certain package isn’t good enough, insist you upload a package with an increased version number, and that happened twice with 5.0.2…" the blog post reads.

The development team expects that 5.0.5 will be the last release before version 5.1.0 launches around June 2022.

Krita 5.0.5 Disrupts the Creative Space

While originally created for the KDE Linux desktop, Krita is a cross-platform application that also supports Windows and macOS as an alternative to GIMP, another open-source image creation program. Interested users can download version 5.0.5 from the official Krita download page.

Krita is intended to disrupt the creative space dominated by proprietary apps like Adobe Illustrator. The project has attracted a lot of attention through Krita's support from Epic Games. Artists in the real world have also gravitated toward Krita. David Savoy uses it to author the popular open-content webcomic "Pepper & Carrot", for example.

The new Krita release comes ahead of the UN's World Creativity and Innovation Day on April 21. Since Krita is open-source and freely available, the program fits in with the message of promoting creativity, despite a lack of official endorsement.

Krita 5.0.5 Is Open-Source Power for Digital Artists

The new release of Krita shows how open-source creative apps are becoming more accepted in professional use. The program has attracted a lot of attention for its powerful, professional feature set at no cost. Users can not only create digital paintings but animate them as well.
