When considering the benefits associated with owning an EV, many people automatically default to the fact that EVs don't consume gas. Of course, not having to fill up your car every week is a huge plus, but your EV has so many more benefits to offer. For example, did you know some EVs allow you to power your house using their onboard electricity? This is just one of the many benefits of owning an EV that this article will cover.

1. Backup Power

The F-150 Lightning is a brilliant example of an EV that allows you to power your house with its onboard power. Ford has officially joined the club of manufacturers that offer full EVs with innovative offerings like the F-150 Lightning. Ford allows you to connect the F-150 Lightning Extended Range to your home via Ford's Charge Station Pro, you can expect to power up your house for three days and even up to ten in ideal conditions (according to Ford). The great thing is you can get notifications on your phone if the power goes out at your home, thanks to the FordPass app.

Obviously, this is an amazing car tech breakthrough and allows you to charge your vehicle elsewhere (perhaps a job during the day), then return to your home and enjoy electric power regardless of the fact that an outage occurred. This is just one of the ways EVs are helping make life easier for people, serving as so much more than mere transportation.

2. The Frunk

Frunk is one of the funniest words you'll encounter. It's a mixture of trunk and front that most car nerds will know but will leave non-car people a bit confused. Electric cars are famous for having huge frunks due to the fact that the location where the engine would be in traditional vehicles is completely empty.

Some EVs don't have frunks, but if yours does, it's an immensely useful storage tool that compliments the traditional rear trunk area. The biggest front cargo areas belong to electric pickups, which comes as no surprise seeing as these vehicles are enormous. Ford claims its F-150 Lightning has the biggest frunk, at 14.1 cu-ft.

The Rivian R1T also features a huge front cargo area, easily accessible via a power bonnet. The Rivian has another ingenious cargo area, a cross-sectional storage compartment that runs through the vehicle like a small cave. The unique architecture of EVs allows for amazing utility compared to traditional internal combustion cars.

3. Lower Maintenance Costs

When you buy a traditional vehicle, manufacturers set up regular maintenance intervals, and ideally, they should be performed regularly for the vehicle's life. Internal combustion cars have many moving parts that can go bad and many non-moving parts that can fail. Common fail items like spark plugs, intake air filters, ignition coils, and PCV systems are absent from electric cars, meaning you won't have to change them; thus, you'll save money in the process. You can even charge your EV for free if you want to, ensuring you'll save money.

Engine oil changes are also a thing of the past on EVs, eliminating one of the most common expenses and hassles associated with owning a vehicle. However, electric vehicles have conventional suspension systems, so items like ball joints, suspension bushings, and upper and lower control arms will still require regular maintenance.

Regardless, the fact that you can drive your vehicle as much as you want without worrying about carbon buildup in your engine, or that pesky oil change coming up, is a huge sigh of relief. Many people lead very hectic lives that might lead to neglected vehicle maintenance. With an EV, you won't run the risk of destroying your engine due to forgotten oil changes.

4. No More Stops at the Gas Station

This is the holy grail of EV ownership to many. Saying bye-bye to gas stations forever is a benefit of EV ownership that shouldn't be underrated one bit. Going to the gas station is a complete waste of time, and nobody likes to sit at the pump watching your hard-earned dollars pouring into your vehicle.

Welcome to the world of EVs, where you don't need to fill up your car once a week, you can simply charge it overnight as you do with any other electronic device, and you can also pocket the gas savings. Saving money on fuel is great, but for many, the convenience of staying away from gas stations will be the biggest perk of owning an electric vehicle.

The amount you'll save compared to a gasoline-powered vehicle depends on the power grid you're connected to and the gas price in your region. But owning an EV is a complete no-brainer if you live in an area with cheap overnight electricity rates and high gas prices.

5. Federal Tax Credits

Purchasing an EV usually carries a premium compared to a comparable ICE vehicle in its class. But a great benefit of buying a new EV is that you may qualify for a federal tax credit towards the purchase of your new car. The federal tax credit allows you to receive up to $7,500 towards your tax liability. So basically, if you owe X amount in taxes, the credit will be discounted from that amount.

This is why different people qualify for varying amounts of the tax credit, because if you owe less in taxes than the full $7,500 credit, you will not receive the total credit, only an amount covering up to your tax liability. Another caveat is that not all manufacturers qualify for the federal tax credit. Once an automaker sells a certain amount of EVs, the tax credit begins to fade out until it is no longer available for that automaker's vehicles.

Frunks Are Here to Stay

The future of vehicles is most definitely electric, and while all the innovative EV features on this list may seem like immense breakthroughs at the moment, eventually most cars will be similarly equipped. In fact, the versatility of the full EV platform allows for many more innovations in our vehicles. The future is very exciting if you're a car nerd.
