If you’re a movie buff or a TV lover, you probably already have a list (or several) where you keep track of what you’ve watched and what’s up next.

We’ve collected and tested some of the best iPhone apps for keeping track of what you watch. Whether you want a simple list of film titles, a detailed record with notes and ratings, or an episode-by-episode TV series tracker, you’ll find an app for you.

1. Sofa

Sofa is a well-designed, versatile app for tracking movies and TV shows. Developed by Shawn Hickman, Sofa lets you create and manage custom lists of media and tracks all your activity over time.

You can build lists for movies you want to watch, shows you’ve seen, your favorite films of the year, and more. The app lets you group lists into custom categories, too, so you can keep your in-progress shows separate from your completed ones. And when you’re not yet sure how to categorize something but want to save it for later, toss it on The Pile, a catch-all inbox.

Tapping Mark as Done on an item sends it to your Activity—a chronological list of all of the items you’ve completed. The app is built around fast input and simple lists, but with various lists and groups, you can personalize your catalog.

You can also use Sofa to track your video game collection, books, podcasts, and music. Just note that all items marked as done will appear together in Activity.

2. TV Time

TV Time is an advanced TV and movie tracking app with a neat interface and fun historical data. The main TV tab features a Watch List that shows exactly where you left off on each tracked series. In the Upcoming tab, you’ll see release dates for upcoming episodes. TV Time tracks movies, too.

When you check off an episode or movie, you can rate it with a number of stars and—in a clever feature that’s unique to this app—add a selection of emoji describing your reaction. You can even pick a favorite character. The app shows which percentage of users have chosen each option—one of several built-in social features.

With custom lists and detailed stats, TV Time is one of the most advanced tracking apps available.

3. MovieBuddy

MovieBuddy is a powerful app for tracking movie and TV activity, as well as managing a database of collected films and series. It hides significant depth behind a clean, modern design that makes it easy to manage a huge catalog.

The editable criteria for each item you add include genre, runtime, cover image, and more. To add a film or series, you can scan a barcode, search online, or enter every detail manually, offering an impressive depth of curation.

You can browse your collection by director, cinematographer, orchestra, packaging—more than two dozen filters in all. You can also add custom categories, set tags, add favorites, and track what you’d like to watch (or buy) next. There’s even a Loaned Out category for DVDs or other items you’ve let friends and family borrow.

4. TV Forecast

TV Forecast is a polished app focused specifically on tracking TV shows. When you add a series to your Forecast, the app’s Up Next view will show you the next episode’s title and a countdown to its air date.

TV Forecast is designed for tracking shows you’re watching; it lacks any kind of built-in history or database view. However, with a premium subscription, you can link a Trakt account and automatically log episodes as you watch them.

Designed by Matt Comi, a co-creator of the classic iPhone game The Incident, TV Forecast is one of the best-looking apps on this list. It also features iOS widgets that show the next episode on your Up Next list and/or a quick Progress overview. The app even integrates with HomeKit to set scenes when you tap Check In with Trakt.

5. JustWatch

JustWatch is part of a category of apps that serves an increasingly essential purpose for at-home movie and TV viewing: checking which movies are available to stream and where.

The Home tab features a collection of films and series that are currently available on the streaming services you select at the top. It’s easy to add items to your Watchlist or mark them as Seen to track your activity over time. You can sort your activity by date watched, release date, or other filters, but the app doesn’t display additional details.

It does, however, show which TV episode is up next and how many remain until you’re caught up. It’ll send notifications about upcoming episodes, too.

6. Letterboxd

Letterboxd bills itself as the "social app for film lovers," so if you’re looking for an app that’s as much about reviews and recommendations as personal tracking, Letterboxd could be the one.

With Letterboxd, you can track your history in the Watchlist and create custom lists, which can be ranked or unranked as well as public or private. Browsing films in the app is a pleasure; you can dig into plenty of details about an item, see other public lists that include it, and read reviews.

The app’s history view is fairly simple, showing a tappable list of movie titles in the order you watched them. This view also shows your rating, indicates whether you’ve added a review, and highlights your favorites.

7. Kernel

Kernel is one of the most straightforward apps available for tracking upcoming releases. If your current system for counting down to movie premieres is nothing more than a series of events in your calendar, this app is a step up.

Kernel is primarily an attractive-looking list that’s organized by the number of days until the movie premieres. Its My Movies view is a simple grid of film posters, each accompanied by a countdown to release.

With one tap, you can add new movies to your to-watch list. There is no history feature in Kernel; it only tracks new and upcoming films. Its Apple Watch app lets you keep up with what’s coming soon right from your wrist.

8. Watcht for Trakt

Trakt is a web platform for making personal movie lists. Watcht for Trakt brings the web service’s powerful and detailed collection capabilities to a native iPhone app.

With Watcht for Trakt, you can manage custom lists and see your detailed movie/TV viewing history. You can also comment on movies, episodes, seasons, and other users' lists. The app’s integration with Trakt means your data is accessible through any browser, but the app enables features like notifications and calendar integration.

9. IMDb

Chances are you’ve already spent plenty of time browsing the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) for details on your favorite films, actresses, or directors. The internet’s best film resource also has an iPhone app that lets you create, manage, and share lists of movies and TV shows.

Unsurprisingly, the IMDb app features the most information about movies and series of all the apps we tested. Its activity tracking is limited to a Watchlist and as many custom lists as you’d like to make, so it’s up to you to manage simple lists of titles. However, you can also add reviews to items in your history and read those posted by other users.

10. Flixter

Flixter was once the go-to app for keeping track of movies you’d seen and rated. Nowasays, it falls squarely in the middle of the other options on this list—neither as simple as Kernel nor as detailed as TV Time. You can create and manage custom lists, add ratings, and write reviews, but the interface hasn’t kept up with the modern iOS aesthetic.

As an iPhone movie tracking app that syncs your activity to a web service, though, Flixter is still a solid option. It's worth a try if you want to access your lists on other devices, too.

Track Movies and TV Shows Your Way

Finding the right iPhone app for tracking what you watch is easier when you know how much detail you’d like your collection to include. It’s best to try out a few of these options until you decide which features work best for you.

If you're worried you’ll never catch up on your backlog of films to watch, try downloading movies to your iPhone to watch on your commute.
