Apple released the iPhone 13 series at its California Streaming event on September 14, 2021. Almost a year later, it's almost time for the Cupertino-based company to unveil the iPhone 14. With the launch date inching closer, rumors of the upcoming iPhone 14 are heating up.

Like its predecessors, the next version up is expected to bring several exciting features to the table. So, if you're planning to upgrade your iPhone in 2022, here's everything we know about the iPhone 14 so far.

The iPhone 14 Lineup and Release Date

Similar to Apple's iPhone 13 series, the company will supposedly unveil four new devices. Industry experts claim the iPhone 14 lineup will supposedly include two 6.1-inch and two 6.7-inch models. However, the mini version will not be available, as Apple is rumored to replace it with a larger 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max (or Plus) model. The other three models include a 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a 6.1-inch iPhone Pro, and a 6.7-inch iPhone Pro Max.

As for the official announcement, Apple typically releases its new iPhones in September. For 2022, the tech giant has already sent invitations for an in-person event scheduled on September 7, dubbed "Far Out." As such, we expect that to be the same day when Apple will launch the iPhone 14.

iPhone 14 Display

The iPhone 13 Pro models have a 120Hz ProMotion display, which is here to stay in the iPhone 14 series. However, it will still be exclusive to the Pro models if the latest rumors are anything to go by. An Always-on display is also reportedly coming, but we expect Apple to limit this feature to the Pro models.

The display notch, introduced in 2017, has been around for quite some time, housing Face ID hardware and the front-facing camera. For the iPhone 14 series, industry experts expect the company to replace the iconic notch with a pill and hole-punch cutout for the camera and Face ID sensors.

A new report by 9To5Mac suggests that Apple will use software wizardry to make the two cutouts appear as one symmetric unit. Apple apparently plans to use this space to display the camera and microphone privacy indicators.

But don't be excited yet, as the redesign will supposedly be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The regular iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max (or Plus) will retain the same notch as the iPhone 13 series.

The latest rumors on the notch redesign are in contrast to earlier rumors in 2021 that suggested Apple could ditch the notch entirely.

iPhone 14 Colors

While Apple is known to offer more exclusive colors, it often retains some key ones across its iPhone lineup. For the upcoming iPhone 14 series, a few color changes are coming. First, Sierra Blue will reportedly not be available on the Pro models, and Apple will ditch Pink on the regular models, according to a report from MacRumors. Both Sierra Blue and Pink will be replaced with Purple.

If that is to stand, it means the iPhone 14 Pro models will ship in either Graphite, Silver, Gold, Purple, or Green, while the standard models will have six color options, Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Red, Purple, and Green.

iPhone 14 Camera Bump

The rear camera module appears to feature the same design in 2022. The only expected change is a thicker bump on the iPhone 14 Pro models to make room for a bigger sensor.

iPhone 14 Build Materials

Earlier renders tipped on the probability of Apple including a stronger, more robust titanium frame: a first for the iPhone. Unfortunately, the latest report from MacRumors has disputed the claim. It, however, confirms that the company tested a titanium frame on the iPhone 14 Pro.

Apple's walk back has been attributed to the realization that it will be expensive and hard to mass produce such a device. Despite the sad news, Apple has already used a titanium chassis in a consumer product—on the pricey Apple Watch Series 7 variant.

iPhone 14 Cooling Mechanism

Under the hood, Apple reportedly tested a vapor chamber thermal system that could be added to its high-end iPhone 14 models. If the cooling solution makes it to the iPhone 14, Apple will join several other Android manufacturers, like Samsung, who have used it in their devices.

Doing this will allow the iPhone 14 to sustain its performance under heavy workloads for longer, making it excellent for mobile gamers.

iPhone 14 Camera

We don't know much about the iPhone 14's camera setup at the time of writing. However, if history is anything to go by, expect a slew of new features. The iPhone 13 series added a handful, and the iPhone 14 series will likely be no different.

Some rumored upgrades in the camera department include a 48MP lens on the iPhone 14 Pro models, a major jump from the usual 12MP. The Pro models might also have 8K recording capabilities, an improvement from the current 4K limit on the iPhone 13 series.

Other leaks point to ultra-wide and selfie camera improvements; the selfie camera, in particular, could reportedly get a wider aperture for clear shots across the entire series.

iPhone 14 Chip and Modem

Each new generation of the iPhone features a chip upgrade. The iPhone 13 launched with the A15 Bionic, and the iPhone 14 is expected to run on the A16 Bionic paired with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X65 modem. Sadly, the A16 Bionic might not power all iPhone 14 models.

Rumors suggest only the high-end iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will pack the new chip, while 2021's A15 Bionic will power the standard iPhone 14 models.

Despite that, reports indicate that standard models might still have overall performance improvements due to slight component upgrades under the hood.

iPhone 14 RAM

In the iPhone 13 lineup, only the Pro models packed 6GB of memory, with standard models running on 4GB RAM. However, this time around, 6GB of RAM is expected to be the standard across all the iPhone 14 models.

Don't go comparing that to Android devices, though, as there are several reasons iPhones use less RAM than Android devices.

iPhone 14 SIM Slot

Industry experts also expect Apple to remove the physical SIM slot and adopt an eSIM-only design. But since not every carrier around the world supports e-SIM, iPhones sold in some regions will still have a SIM slot. However, even in locations with e-SIM support, it will be optional.

Will the iPhone 14 Include Satellite Connectivity?

Satellite connectivity on the iPhone is rumored to debut in 2022 at the earliest. With the Snapdragon X65 modem, the iPhone 14 could support satellite connectivity.

If included, iPhone users would be able to send short messages and report issues when cellular connectivity is unavailable.

Recent rumors from MacRumors suggest Apple could announce the feature at its Far Out event in September, in partnership with Globalstar.

The iPhone 14 Is Coming Soon

The iPhone 13 was an incremental upgrade compared to its predecessor. But moving forward, the iPhone 14 could feature some of the most drastic changes in the device's history.

Since the official unveiling is almost here, let's wait and see rumors that will hold and those that are wrong. Don't forget to tune into the Apple event on September 7, where we expect the company to reveal the iPhone 14 and other new products, like the Apple Watch.
