Instagram is taking the wraps off Remix, its new TikTok Duet-like feature. Remix lets you create collaborative Reels, giving you the chance to record alongside friends and other users on the app.

Duet-Like Remixes Arrive on Reels

Reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi was one of the first to notice that Instagram was testing the Remix feature, and now the feature has officially dropped.

Instagram took to Twitter to announce Remix's launch, noting that you can now use the Remix feature "to create your own reel next to one that already exists."

It's no secret that this feature closely resembles Duets, one of the most popular features on TikTok. Duets let you build off of another user's video to create a skit, film a reaction, or even collaborate musically.

Reels was heavily inspired by TikTok in the first place, so it doesn't come as a surprise that Instagram has cloned yet another TikTok feature.

But Instagram is not alone in its quest to compete with TikTok. Snapchat is working on a Duets-like feature, which is ironically also called Remix. Snapchat's Remix mimics Duet as well, allowing users to "remix" their friends' Stories. The only difference is that the feature will only be available between friends (for now, at least).

How to Use the Remix Feature

Remixing a video on Instagram Reels only takes a few simple taps. After choosing the clip you want to Remix, tap the three dots in the top right corner of the video.

When the menu opens at the bottom of your screen, select Remix This Reel. From here, you can proceed to create your addition to the Reel—the original video will play on the left side of your screen, while you can record your own to the right. You can also opt to upload a prerecorded video from your camera roll.

Instagram will also provide you with several tools on the left side of the screen, which let you adjust video volume, add effects, and more. Keep in mind that this feature only appears to work on newer Reels, so you may have to re-upload yours if you want other users to Remix them.

Remixes vs. Duets: Which Will Prevail?

With Instagram hopping on the Duet bandwagon, and Snapchat following closely behind, TikTok may have a lot to contend with.

But despite TikTok's competition getting fiercer, it doesn't seem like Instagram Reels, Snapchat Spotlight, or YouTube Shorts can come close to competing with TikTok just yet. TikTok still has a tight grip on its massive userbase, and it's unlikely that its existing users will switch to another platform.
