actually there is a developer version available from MS - if you develop or intend to develop apps this £100 version offers many licences of all of the styles as well as Office etc...

linux ubuntu 11.10 very similar in desktop appearance but much better in performance -- speaking as someone who uses both on a regular basis.

Pop into your local computer store or big box store and buy an upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate.  You could also search for potentially better prices online.

what do you mean by inexpensive upgrade? you need dvd and serial to upgrade.
